Review: First of all, this book should be read by a younger teen set, or adults who enjoy a lighter YA fantasy storyline. The main character, Sophie, is a likeable character. What irked me a bit was when she tossed her hard work, determination, and goals of getting into college on scholarship for a boy. The guy is the typical heart throb with some emo tendencies, and pushes her away constantly for the majority of the book.
The plotline is very original, but I felt like others readers' reviews suggest, the story should be edited of excess details. It tends to slow the story down and take away from the main plot.
Dividing the book into three parts, the introduction of Sophie, her friends, and Nate is easy to follow and sets a good tone for the story.
The middle of the story drags for me! It started with Sophie slogging into despair, losing all interest in life, and whining about a lost love. Understandable given she is 16, but where did all her drive go?! By the time they arrive in New York to try and solve the mystery, and her/Nate's possible doom, I wanted to yell at them to get on with it already!
Now the last few chapters had a great climatic end. I had to reread a few parts of the tie in to Egyptian history, curses, and how the "prophecy" was to end. I blame that more on my fast reading than the author. The author leaves a good cliffhanger for book #2 where I hope the storyline will be more action filled and focused on their survival of the unknown, and not bogged down with so many extraneous details.
