This was never what I wanted, but fame in the mafia was what I got. When you see numbers like I can, death becomes a constant threat. It lingers, waiting for you to make one wrong move. One falter. One fatal step out of line.

The endless presence will drain you, layering you with guilt and regret. Until one day, you’re covered in blood. And in that moment, you realize… you’ve become the grim reaper yourself.
Nothing could stop me from saving my little sister. Nothing could weaken me... until my boss threw a blonde slave at my feet. Once I found out who she was, I should have wanted her dead.

But I had a bad habit of breaking the rules.

And I loved that she hated me.
Like a stupid man named Romeo, I fell for the daughter of the feuding family. Like an idiot named Juliet...
She didn't try to run.

Title: Stop the Diet, I Want To Get Off!

Author: Lisa Tillinger Johansen

Publisher: J. Murray Press

Pages: 350

Genre: Nonfiction/Nutrition/Health

The Paleo.  The Zone.  The Gluten-free.  Another day, another diet.  We’re caught in a never-ending merry-go-round of weight loss plans, fueled by celebrity endorsers, TV doctors and companies angling for a piece of a $60 billion industry.  But do these diets really work?  And how healthy are they? Registered Dietitian Lisa Tillinger Johansen examines dozens of the most wildly popular diets based on medical facts, not hype.  And along the way, she reveals tried-and-true weight loss strategies, relying on her years of hospital experience, weight-loss seminars and community outreach efforts.  With insight and humor, Stop The Diet, I Want To Get Off shows that the best answer is often not a trendy celebrity-endorsed diet, but easy-to-follow guidelines that are best for our health and our waistlines.

Book Excerpt:
The idea for this book began at a wedding.
Who doesn’t love a good wedding? The clothes, the flowers, the romance, the food…
Ah, the food. As we moved into the banquet hall, the culinary feast was on everyone’s minds. It was all anyone seemed talk about. But for some reason, guests weren’t conversing about the dishes being served; they were swapping stories of diets they had heard about from friends, magazine articles, even celebrities on talk shows.
I’m a registered dietitian with a master’s degree in nutritional science and years of clinical and health education experience. I’ve counseled thousands of patients and clients on all of these diets. But hearing the guests only momentarily distracted me from my horrible faux pas of wearing white (gasp!) to a friend’s wedding.
“I’m on the Blood Type Diet,” said a woman with an impossibly high bouffant hairdo. “You’ve heard of that, haven’t you? It’s the one where you choose your foods based on your blood type. I’m an AB, so I’ll be having the fish.”
“Really?” her friend replied. “I swear by the gluten-free diet. I’m on it, my daughter’s on it, and my granddaughter’s on it.”
I happened to know her granddaughter was six and didn’t have a gluten sensitivity or celiac disease.
Then there was the stocky guy who was trying to impress one of the bridesmaids. “I’m a paleo man myself,” he said, piling his plate high with beef kebabs. “It gives me more stamina, know what I mean? It puts me in touch with my inner caveman. There’s a restaurant near my apartment that’s paleo friendly. Maybe we can grab a bite there sometime, or…Hey wait, where are you going?”
And there were three Weight Watchers sisters who typed furiously on their phones and argued over their meals’ point values. Apparently there was some discrepancy between their various apps, and the sisters’ discussion was becoming more heated by the moment.
I’m past the point of being surprised by the wide range of weight-loss strategies—
some worthless, some crazy, some quite reasonable—being tossed around. In the past few years, there has been a tidal wave of diets washing up on the shores of our nutritional consciousness. Celebrities prance across our screens, promoting a variety of weight-loss schemes on talk shows and infomercials. Medical doctors star in their own syndicated television programs, exposing millions to weight-loss techniques, often unsupported by medical research. Other diets get traction on the Internet, racing all over the globe in social media posts, YouTube videos, and annoying spam e-mails. It’s hard to walk past a shopping center vitamin store without being approached by salespeople trying to pitch the latest weight-loss supplements. It seems that everyone wants a piece of the pie; the American diet industry tops $60 billion annually.
It’s classic information overload. You can’t blame people for being confused by all the diets out there, even as crazy as some of them may sound. I didn’t speak up to my fellow wedding guests that day, but it occurred to me they would benefit from some hard facts about the diets they so ardently follow.
So during the toasts, I thought to myself, I should write a book.
I counsel clients on these matters each week, giving them information they need to make the best choices for their health and waistlines. I find that all too often there’s nothing to the diets that are presented to me in my counseling sessions and classes. They just plain don’t work, particularly over the long term. And some of them are harmful, even potentially lethal. But it’s also unhealthy to carry extra weight on our frames. So how do we separate good diets from the bad?
In the chapters to come, we’ll take a good, hard look at the various weight-loss plans out there. I’ll pull no punches in my professional evaluation of some of the most wildly popular diets, both bad and good, of the past few years. And along the way, I’ll explore tried-and-true strategies for losing weight, based on my years of hospital experience, weight-loss seminars, and community outreach efforts. More often than not, the best answer is not a trendy celebrity-endorsed diet, but instead a few easy-to-follow guidelines that I’ve seen work in literally thousands of cases.
Enough is enough. It’s time for the madness—and the diets—to stop.

I'm now in my 30s. I swear something happened and all that great and easier way of weight loss went out the door with my 20s. My hubby and I both have struggled the weight loss boogie. It sucks. I have to say this book gave me a great, refreshing view of this ongoing concern. The book is easy to read and glean new ideas for even the most battle weary person on weight loss. The author, Lisa, is a Registered Dietitian. Highly recommended to anyone sick of trying diet fads and needing some common sense rules, tricks, and facts to follow. The book doesn't blame the reader or harp on constant weakness- it addresses what the reader needs to focus on and what to drop in the weight loss fads. Jump on the merry-go-round and find the right stop to stop on. :)

Book Tour & Book Review: Yell and Shout Cry and Pout by Dr. Peggy Kruger Tietz

Title: Yell and Shout Cry and Pout: A Kid’s Guide to Feelings
Author: Peggy Kruger Tietz
Publisher: Independent
Pages: 40
Genre: Children’s Picture Book
Format: Paperback/Kindle/Nook
Yell and Shout, Cry and Pout: A Kid's Guide to Feelings is an essential guidebook for adults in steering children through the confusing behaviors that emotions evoke. When you understand the purpose of emotions, behavior becomes understandable. Each of the eight emotions is clearly defined thorough vignettes and illustrations, keeping both adult and child captivated, thus creating an opportune time for discussion. By recognizing that all humans experience these emotions throughout their lives, the book provides a true sense of comfort. Emotions are not to be shunned, but rather embraced and explained to provide a positive development environment for all children.

Being the mother of a preschooler and a licensed social worker with at risk children, I'm pretty darn familiar with pouting, crying, and shouting. I even do them myself! One of the hardest things to learn as a human (at any age, honestly) is your emotions and your personal reaction to them. What the heck do they mean? Why do we have them?!
Dr. Peggy Kruger Tietz does a kick butt job in the quest of explaining the murky world of feelings. She starts with a fun little one page rhythm to introduce the book. The following every day emotions are explained: anger, fear, shame, sadness, happiness, love, disgust, surprise. Each emotion has a color assigned to it and a  scenario children face everyday. A bubble of example actions following the feeling is given, then the author asks the question of how the reader acts out that particular feeling. To wrap up, she gives three very clear explanations of the feeling, a minor example, and how the feeling can help to accomplish something.
I'm so very much looking forward to sharing this book with my son as he grows and learns this lifelong toughie. With my work kiddos, I hope this will be a critical resource to discuss their emotions and some self discovery.

Note: I was provided a paperback copy of this book by the author and the blog tour company in return for a honest review. It did not affect my review in any way.

Title: Ben’s School Daze

This is a story about Ben, a lively and active boy, who finds the sensory experiences within his day to be overwhelming.   Loud noises vibrate through his body and “shoes and sock bother him.. they never feel just right”.   This can make it hard for Ben to be a good student.  But don’t worry, his teacher and mum know what to do to help him through his day.

Book Excerpt:
Ben is a playful, lively boy
who is always on the go

He is out of bed at the crack of dawn
and never seems to slow

Lego, swords and action figures
are his favourite toys

He loves running, climbing, riding
and playing with other boys.

But something is going on for Ben,
it’s not always smooth sailing

At times the smallest request
leaves him stomping and wailing

His sister complains that he’s moody
‘cause his behaviour can be erratic

He plays up at dinner and bath-time
and parties make him frantic.

Ask Ben and he would tell you
that it’s hard to cope each week

With scratchy tags, stiff clothes
and horrid smells that reek

Shoes and sock bother him
they never feel “just right”

And hairbrushing “hurts”
so he protests with a fight.
I loved this book! I have and currently work with kiddos who have some issues processing the fast paced world around us. Whether due to a diagnose or simple a more quiet child's way of perceiving the world, this can be a hard world to take in for any kiddo. My own son, 3/12 years old, tends to more time to process, observe new situations. If we attend a busy or crowded event, he needs time afterwards to process it or have quiet time. I can only imagine how it must few for a child who has a diagnosis that impairs and heightens his or her awareness of every day life. The child friendly book gives an excellent way of showing how a typical day in the life for one of these kiddos is. The introduction before the story even highlights way to use the book. Once the story goes through the struggles of Ben's day and how the adults in his life helped him achieve, the author gives an explanation of sensory processing disorder, activities to help, and other resources to follow up on. I highly recommend this book for anyone with children or who work with children. This is a great resource I plan on sharing with other parents and when my son is older and can understand. I think it will help him personally and help him understand and have empathy for his peers that have special and/or different needs.
Note: I received a copy of ebook by the author and book tour. This did not affect my review in any way.

When things go wrong,
Just stop and pray,
And angels come
To save the day.

"Angels, Angels, Everywhere" was a cute read. The illustrations were colorful and cast angels in a kind, loving way as they interacted with the children. The rhymes were easy for new readers. While I have different beliefs regarding angels (traditional Christian), it was a endearing way to introduce angels to a child.

I kindly received a paperback copy of this children's book from the author and book tour company in exchange for an honest  review. Thank you!
