I dislike having to murder someone. Kidnapping is worse. At least when I setup a kill, I know what's coming. No connections, no honesty, no surprises. Everything I say and do are just steps to luring in my victim. Once the victim falls right into the trap, the next move is swift: crushed windpipe, fatal concussion, or a good ol' fashioned headshot.
Kidnapping, on the other hand, is a little trickier. First, the victim has an opportunity to respond. I don't like this. Sometimes they cry. Sometimes they manage to alert the authorities. And sometimes they escape, usually by inflicting bodily harm on me.
Dead people don't retaliate.
The second major difference between killing and kidnapping is my conscience. I get in and out with a kill. We have no chance to bond.
Abductees require a little more one-on-one. As much as I try to keep the switch turned off, I can't help but listen to their pleas and demands. And I usually realize I'm a jerk.
That's exactly where I find myself one late afternoon in June. I prefer doing this at night, but moreover, I would prefer not doing this at all.
Instead, I have a belligerent nine year old girl sitting in the passenger seat of my Honda Accord, shackles on her wrists and ankles and a small stuffed bunny on her lap. She's eying me in a way that makes me self-conscious. Like I'm the bad guy.
Probably because I am the bad guy.

“Summoned” hops right into introducing the slightly wrong, harsh, but oh so sarcastic and funny personality of 23 years old Dimitri. Forced to kidnap a dangerously smart 9 year old by the whims and wish of his master, Karl, Dimitri is left with ferrying her to the mansion grounds his master and family lives on; he will not know of her fate. He’s an entrapped genie. Going to the nearest run down bar to drown his sorrows in cheap drinks, he meets the enigmatic and random Syd. What starts a steamy series of increasingly frequent sexy times turns into affection and a desire for a normal life for Dimitri.

Sent on increasingly gruesome and violent missions by Karl, Dimitri leaves Syd hanging one too many times with one too many questions unanswered. Having his heart torn out and trying to fend off the creepy, possessive claws of Karl’s daughter breaks Dimitri’s small hope of a normal life to pieces.

Suddenly, the story of Dimitri’s family’s bond to their masters’ blood lines starts to unravel and insane twists and turns shatter what little made sense to Dimitri in his life in the first place. Syd ends up back in his life, in the end rescuing him and freeing him in multiple ways. Syd and Dimitri’s families are twined together in such a twisted weave; the reader will wonder how all the knots can possibly be undone for the two of them to survive.

“Summoned” has a fun story line and raw, sarcastic characters. Be warned, this is an adult book with lots of steamy scenes.

I want to start out my review by warning any potential reader that book one of the series should be read first for the reader to really understand book two.

Ex-boyfriend and con, Riley, has snuck into Vivienne’s apartment and beaten her to a pulp. Riley is the son of a wannabe politician and business man who is bent on covering his son’s evil doing. Carrying Riley’s baby and knowledge of his crimes, Vivienne is a liability he is willing to cover up at any cost, including her life.

Micah is the first to discover Vivienne nearly dead in her apartment. In cahoots with the police detective that was charged to keep her safe and failed, Micah is hell bent on bringing Riley into police custody using all the tools at his wealthy disposal. The supernatural elements of this angelic and realistic romance start to literally pop up on Micah’s sexy back. Between hearing voices, seeing insanely amazing future dreams and events starring Vivienne, and hearing of his mythical heritage rock Micah’s world. While Vivienne heals and Micah makes plan to help her ease into a better future, her feisty personality and will to live cause him to fall further in desperate love.

I loved having the second story in the series given in Micah’s voice. It’s easy to say he’s a very dreamy prince charming and the plug in this second book making him supernatural only makes him more delicious. I look forward to continuing their love story.

It is from Glendale, Arizona that Zoey Derrick, writes stories as hot as the desert sun itself. It is this passion that drips off of her work, bringing excitement to anyone who enjoys a good and sensual love story.
 Not only does she aim to take her readers on an erotic dance that lasts the night, it allows her to empty her mind of stories we all wish were true.
 Her stories are hopeful yet true to life, skillfully avoiding melodrama and the unrealistic, bringing her gripping Erotica only closer to the heart of those that dare dipping into it. Book Review & Tour: Enchanced by Courtney Farrell

Michelle and Seth, brother and sister, are the offspring of the lineage that created The Institution. The Institution’s purpose? Breeding genetically perfect specimens and culling those below standards. Immune to disease, insanely intelligent, and bred to withstand any human weakness, the Enhanced rule the world after the war. Norms, those without genetic engineering and “wild bred,” are kept outside of the wall and used as servants or for sources of amusement. Michelle, Seth, and their band of friends’ worlds are about to end. Seth and his best friend Brian are kicked out of the gated community and forced to band together with a clan or norms. Michelle and her friends race to find out why the boys were sent away and discover previous unknown powers. Discovering love, hate, and the true nature of being human, Enhanced is a fun romp in the dystopian genre.

This book could definitely be included on a “must read” list for young adults who love a bit of sci-fi or dystopian in their reading regiment. Besides a few curse words here and there, the book deals with natural teenager/young adult dilemmas like love, lust, growing up, and raging against adults. I never felt the book halted on the action and the characters had clearly defined personalities. The market is swamped with this genre, but this book holds its own in the saturated market.

Brian could go no farther. Below him, Carissa rounded the corner, sticking close to the only home she ever had.

“Carissa!” he shouted. She hesitated, looking up, and then shook her head at him.

Brian waved wildly. “Wait!” That threw him off balance and he windmilled his arms, trying to stay on his feet. Fresh pigeon droppings made the metal slick, and the Institute’s star athlete failed. He slipped and crashed hard onto the broken pavement Outside. Pain exploded through his knees and back, but he struggled to his feet almost immediately. Bloody abrasions covered Brian’s forearms and knees. Pain screamed from the crushed knee, triggering an animal instinct to hide. He backed into the shadow of one of the little Norm hovels that lined the alley.

He took a deep breath to call Carissa’s name again, but a flash of blue in his peripheral vision stopped him. A couple of Augment security guards lurked in the alley outside the gate. Cooking fires made the air gray with smoke, giving the place an eerie feel. Brian concentrated, trying for a pain block, but these things take a focused mind. He limped around the corner, finally forcing himself into a shambling run. Carissa slipped along ahead of him like she didn’t even touch the ground.

Brian did his best to catch up, but he never got any closer. The cull entered a sunny stretch and he suddenly saw why. Carissa ran for her life, pursued by a man in blue. Pain from Brian’s shattered knee shot up his leg, slowing him down, but he wouldn’t give up. Ahead, the blue uniformed man dropped to a crouch and pulled out a crossbow equipped with a laser sight. Ignoring his injuries, Brian pounded down the alley.

The cull must have seen the little red dot dancing along the wall, because she stopped running and turned around to face her hunter. Sunlight caught her hair, turning it to gold. She spread her arms like an angel, and the bolt took her in the heart. Carissa fell more gracefully than any cull had a right to, dead before she hit the ground.

“No!” Brian screamed. He turned on her murderer. The Augment security chief knelt in the dirt with a second bolt already fixed in his crossbow, aimed right at the boy’s chest. For a moment, neither one moved.

Brian didn’t want to know, but he had to ask.  “Do you,” he gasped for air and spit out blood. “Do you kill all the culls?”

The man’s face crumpled, making him look decades older. “Them fancy genes of yours, they don’t want ‘em mixing with the common folks’.”

“They? Who gave the order?” But Brian already knew.

“Salomon.”

“So there’s no colony of Imperfects…that’s just what they tell the culls, so they go quietly.”

The security chief nodded, his weathered cheeks streaked with tears. “I told ya, boy. Givin’ her food wouldn’t matter none.”

The Augment unexpectedly pivoted the weapon in his hands and held out the stock. Brian snatched it away and leveled it threateningly. The chief clambered to his feet, gripping his knees like an old man, and straightened up to stand at attention. His blue eyes locked fearlessly on Brian’s brown ones. Brian froze, and the man gave him an encouraging nod.

                “Go ahead, son. Do me the favor.” The chief slowly lifted his arms and held them out, just like Carissa had. Strangely, that little movement saved his life.

                Brian couldn’t pull the trigger. Instead, he swung the bow savagely against the Institute wall, beating it over and over until it flew from his hands. Then he walked away, leaving the Institute security chief alone with the body of the first girl he ever loved. At the corner Brian turned and looked back.

“Are y’ gonna tell ‘em?” the chief called down the alley. His voice echoed strangely from the ruins of the old city. “Are y’ gonna tell’em, or will you let ‘em hope?”

Courtney Farrell was once a molecular biologist, but her habit of daydreaming destroyed far too many experiments. As it turned out, writing down the movies behind her eyes was a lot more fun than lab work. Courtney is the author of fourteen nonfiction books for young people, mostly on social and environmental topics. Book Review & Tour: Ivory by F. M. Sherrill

Two worlds. One dark and one bright. Gryth lives in eternal sunlight and Lectra in moonlight. Part of a three warrior group called the Blood Pack she roams the outside walls of Gryth, killing anyone and anything in her way. Ivory’s people are dying and she sets out to a final battle to destroy her enemies. Captured, she is made to relive all the truths, lies, and truths within lies that are her past, present, and future. Facing possible death multiple times, betrayal from her closest allies and winning and losing love within a few months, her plate is quite full. She must face herself, her past sins, and her heritage.  Now facing the true enemy that is out to destroy their whole world Silver, King of the Lecs, and Ivory must stand together or lose everything and everyone they love.

The author’s style of writing is very fluid and poetic. Most books I like to listen to audibly using a special program, but the writing was too quick and descriptive. The reader definitely needs a quiet nook and a few free hours to be able to follow this author’s extremely fast descriptions and actions sequences. The story is very gripping and a lovely dark fantasy. The author does a great job of setting the scene, character building, and generally making the reader dizzy with all the twists and turns. My only complaint is the story seemed to peter out at the end. Ivory was coming to grips, adapting, and all of a sudden she’s back to bad-attitude-I-hate-everyone sequence. It’s like all of her growth went down the drain and she’s back to be a witchy woman with no compassion or heart. The book ends on a funky cliffhanger and no closure. Hopefully the author will wrap up the series and Ivory can finally get some lovin’, defeat the bad guy, and save her people.

Review: Give Me Reason (Reason #1) by Zoey Derrick

Vivienne Callahan’s life is definitely not roses, puppies, and sunshine. Raised by an addict mother and thrown in the hospital by an abusive ex-boyfriend, Vivienne is finally on her feet. She surviving on a minimal paycheck and living in a rundown part of town, but she’s free of her boyfriend’s abuse and taking care of herself as she has her whole life.

Readers don’t learn a bunch of Micah’s past or present, but readers will fall in love with this sweet character. After working his way little it by little bit into Vivienne’s life, he leaves her a big tip one night. Her pride stinging, Vivienne tails him to his huge billionaire business on a mission to return the money. After fits of fainting due to lack of food and being pregnant, Vivienne finds herself in the hospital.

Vivienne’s life takes a drastic turn for the better. She has support for basic needs and access to medical care paid for by Micah. Micah takes a back seat to let Vivienne work through her pride, but is always in the background as her guardian angel. Literally! There is a small touch of paranormal that hints to coming out in the next of the series.

Totally loved the author’s realistic writing, and it was not overdone or too dramatic. The characters are believable. The book ends on an insane cliffhanger that almost made me throw my Kindle across the room. Almost.

Review & Giveaway: Good Intentions (The Dead War Series) by D. N. Simmons

 

Good intentions lead to zombies. Whoops.

I have a minor (major) zombie and dystopian reading obsession. I've read indie, mainstream, and New York best seller zombie novels. Some rock and some stink. This author rocked my zombie loving socks off. The author manages realistic horror without being too gory or going out of the way to make the reader gag with grossness. The writing is detailed without being boring and went straight to the zombie horror and mayhem. Yeah!

Vincent and his fellow scientist cronies are awarded an army contract to work with an unknown compound. The purpose is to mold the compound into something that will cure diseases and make American soldiers superior. Instead, it raises a dead chimpanzee that goes ape crazy and eats one of the scientists. And walla! Insane super strong and fast zombies are born... And eating everyone in sight. Chicago is swarmed and soon the outlying areas are being infected.

Further along in the story CDC top brass, military, Vincent, and miscellaneous folks band together to travel to a safe location. Their purpose is to try and come up with a cure while the rest of America gets ready for the epidemic.

And suddenly... there are vampires. I can't wait for book two.

Review: Been Loving You Too Long (DuChamps Dynasty, #1) by Seraphina Donavan

This novel follows the popular storyline of rich dude and poor chick falling in love... sort of? Ophelia Broulliard and Vincent DuChamps have loved and lusted after each other for many years. The story follows their rather roller coaster ride into marriage. After the patriarch of the family dies suddenly, his will dictates the three DuChamps siblings to complete certain tasks to get access to their inheritance. Throughout the story, Vincent is trying to resolve the scars left from a childhood witnessing his parents' murder suicide by car. While Ophelia cared for the ailing Thomas, Vincent tries to keep the family hotel business from floundering and being corrupt by another family member.
Forced not unhappily into marriage after a one night affair together, Ophelia and Vincent are married within a couple days of the will reading. After lots of graphic scenes of sexy time (involving the nice girl not being nice), Ophelia learns some possibly disturbing results, and Vincent is battling to trap the relative who is corrupting the business.
The story ends with another sexy time sequence and the happy couple vowing to make it work. Story was predictable and an easy romantic read filled with lots of sexy time scenes. To be honest, I ended up skipping over those scenes after the first/second one so I could continue the story. Not a mind blowing read, but simple romantic read to keep the reader entertained.
