I can be a bit of a fantasy junky at time and usually prefer YA or adult fantasy. I can be a bit leery of middle grade or fantasy geared toward a younger set. This book? Nerp. This novel can appeal to all ages though the author states it's targeted for some of the younger folk. The blurb perfectly explains the book. Lily is an excellent example of a vulnerable, but very strong young lady in the face of challenges. The supporting characters are appealing. Their backgrounds, personalities, and roles in the book are clear and stated. The fantasy concept of magic, gods, and mischief are absolutely present and fun. Many of the elements in the book such as loss, courage, and growing (in a physical and mental sense) can ring true with any audience. The plot is fairly easy to understand, but the end action caught me in surprise. I am going to happily pass this book onto my nephew who is 11 years old. The fighting and adventure scenes are on par with a Harry Potty or Percy Jackson. There is nothing inappropriate in this lovely novel. I can absolutely see this book appealing to girls, boys, or adult version of kids, like myself. ;) For unsure or wary readers, this would be a great introduction to the fantasy realm and a story even older kiddos could read with their parents.

The cover is gorgeous! Mr. Felton illustrated it all :)

Note: The author provided a review copy in return for an honest review. This did not affect my opinion in any way.

T.C.R. Felton is a Houston, Texas based artist that graduated with honors from the University of Houston with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. He is married and has one child with another on the way this year.

"Lightsreach" came about naturally after a conversation with fellow painter, Benjamin Walton. T.C.R. painted a series of illustrations in his studio that came completely out of the blue. There were castles, dragons, and lights and none of them were intended to be connected. They were just spur of the moment painting with no plan or thought put into them before the paint hit the canvas. They each just came from the brush strokes.

Ben came into the studio and asked how they were all related, as they shared similar themes. T.C.R. then sat down and wrote a few pages that ultimately became "Lightsreach," the final piece in the series of paintings.

Book Review & Giveaway: What Little Remains by Gabriella Wise

review

The intriguing aspect of this YA dystopian is it's focus. Rather than completely focused on the main character, Charlie, and her survival in a destroyed world, the author does a lovely job of dealing with young adult/early 20's issues: relationships, grief, death, independence, and becoming an adult (reality sucks and rules, right?)

Charlie is in love (she tells herself) with the leader, Ricky, of the band of survivors that live in an army base/fort. Every day can be a fight for survival as the established group hunts for supplies to replenish their needs. Scavengers are deadly and lurking out to rob innocents and grief eats at the survivors. But sometimes the danger is way, way closer than Charlie will ever realize.

I had a great time learning more about Charlie and the world she lives in. I appreciated her sticking to her guns and morals while she becomes more of a self-assured woman. The post-apocalyptic world and its problems are realistic. Nicole, Charlie's rebel BFF, is an eye brow raising hell raiser but a good side kick to Charlie's steadfast and cautious nature.

excerpt
"I had convinced myself that everything beautiful had been destroyed with the rest of the world. Seeing those flowers, a piece of beautiful life in this dark world, was incredible. It was breathtaking. In all the ugliness going on in the world, those flowers had bloomed and kept living.

I am alive. I am living, and I get to choose how I spend this time. For some reason, I am still on this planet. Maybe it is divine or maybe it is just dumb luck. But I am here. I am not going to waste this time anymore. I am not going to be scared anymore."

"What a future I’ll have. The irony is almost laughable. All those nights I stayed up and worried he wouldn’t come back to me. Now I’m worried that he will."

"He pulls me off the ground and leads me to the dance floor. The tempo is slow as he pulls me in close, wrapping his arms around my waist. I put my arms around his neck, resting my head on his chest. Behind my back, he intertwines his fingers and rests his chin on the top of my head.

It’s weird to think that later this month we would have had our senior prom. I don’t know whom I would have gone with, but I’m confident it wouldn’t be the guy holding me. We aren’t the same people we were the summer before our senior year.

I haven’t decided yet if that’s a good thing or not."

interview

Tell us a bit about yourself
I am an avid reader. Once I start reading a book, I can’t put it down until I have finished it. This makes school and life very challenging because there have been quite a few times that I put both on hold to finish a book. I am also a terrible procrastinator, especially when I have access to Wi-Fi. I also love photography and animals. I combine the two often, with my dogs paying the price. I also love movies.

When did you begin writing?
I don’t really remember a time when I wasn’t writing. The very first thing I remember writing is a poem when I was in the second grade. I started with poetry when I was younger and moved to short stories as I grew older.

Have you ever been discouraged in regard to your writing ability and if so, how did you get past it and move forward?
My immediate family has always been super supportive about my writing. I’ve had other family members express to me that they didn’t think it was practical or didn’t see how I could possibly do it. Then there is that look that some people give me that’s like “Oh, you’re a writer” which translates to “You mean you sit on your parents basement couch and mooch off them?” The best way that I have found to deal with them is to just keep going. Every time I accomplish something, I know that I am proving them wrong. I also focus on the really positive things that come from my writing.

What's your favorite thing about writing?
My favorite thing about writing is seeing something that was just an idea turn into an actual tangible product.

What is your writing style? Do you like to outline or just write as you go?
As far as my writing style, I will generally do a basic outline with all my key plot points. I almost always do an outline for longer projects and also include dates so that I get the timeline right. I also do extensive character charts and plan out how the character will develop throughout the story.

Do you have a favorite spot where you like to write?
Where I like to write depends on my mood. Most of the time I’ll just write in my room. I’ve started to get out a lot more and start to write at the closest coffee shop.

What is something you've written that will never see the light of day?
The very first manuscript that I ever wrote (when I was a freshman in high school) will NEVER see the light of day. I look back on it and can’t help but cringe. My writing has progressed so much since then.

What is your writer food?
Umm…food in general.

What's the hardest thing about writing for you?
The hardest thing about writing for me is to remember that I don’t have to be perfect; that what I write doesn’t have to be perfect.

What inspires you to write?
There are two things that really inspire me to write. The first thing is that I love to tell stories. I love being able to express myself through writing and being able to share that with other people. The second reason is that books were such a haven for my growing up. I didn’t have the best experience in grade school and books became my refuge. I read ALL THE TIME. I want my books to be able to do that for other people.

How many books have you written and which is your favorite?
What Little Remains is the first book that I have written and published, so, by default, right now it is my favorite.

What are some of your favorite books?
That is like asking me to choose my favorite child. I won’t admit to a favorite.

What authors do you like to read?
Right now I have Suzanne Collins, Veronica Rossi, Becca Fitzpatrick, Meg Cabot, and Victoria Aveyard on my top bookshelf. But that changes almost weekly.

What inspired you to write What Little Remains?
I remember being in Algebra 1 my freshman year of high school, after a biology class. I started thinking about what would happen and how people would survive if natural disasters wiped out most of the world and our modern conveniences, and my book progressed from that idea.

If you could choose a dream cast for insert title, who would you pick?
Oh wow, I couldn’t possibly cast my characters. I think it is super important to be able to leave that up to the imagination of the reader, so I wouldn’t even say which actors I favor.

Would you say you relate to any of your characters? If so, which one and why?
I think I relate to a little bit to a lot of my characters. Charlie and Daren are definitely a reflection of my sarcastic and sassy side. Nicole is a reflection of the stronger, more resilient side of myself. Even Ricky is a reflection of a side of myself. While he takes it to an extreme, there is defiantly a part of me that would go to great lengths to protect the people that I love.

This or that.
That.
Sweet or Salty?
Salty.
Naughty or nice?
…Little bit of both.
Cats or dogs?
Dogs
Vanilla or chocolate?
Allergic to both.

If you were deserted on an island, which author would you want to be stranded with?
J.K. Rowling. One, because she would tell the best stories. Two, because I know her fans would track her to the ends of the earth now that she’s promised more Harry Potter-related books.

author1-300x77
71gmPRZp3uL._UX250_My name is Gabriella Wise. I am a self-published (indie) author, and my first novel, What Little Remains was released in March 2015. I was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky. I have loved to tell stories since I was a little kid, and this passion for storytelling has brought me to this point. With my first full-length novel, What Little Remains, already published, I am looking toward finishing the second book in The Fallout trilogy.

I love reading. Some of my favorite authors include Suzanne Collins, Veronica Rossi, Cassandra Clare, Becca Fitzpatrick, J. K. Rowling, and Meg Cabot. I also enjoy long walks in the rain (especially when I don’t have waterproof shoes on--#collegeprobs), eating chocolate (which I am allergic to), and freaking out about my favorite fandoms.

"Bueno" is the first of a three book series about Harvey, an American, and his tenacious and sometimes naive leadership as a headmaster in Spain of an international school. Harvey is an extremely likeable and pluckable character who battles through a new culture and a school bogged down with personal politics and favoritism.

I was immediately drawn into the story and had a hard time putting it down. I grew up with a ton of different cultures here near Houston, Texas, but the international school scene was new to me. Being transported to that world and being dumped straight into the struggles and drama that Harvey faced was eye opening. The "brujahs" (witches in Spanish) is a word, an excellent one at that, used to describe the clandestine group of tenured staff at the school that rule its inner workings. Harvey is hired on tentatively and strives to do what's best for all involved and steps on some grumpy toes. The story goes through his personal losses, the sheer nastiness and lengths that people will go to keep change out, and his blossoming relationship.

Harvey is an extremely likeable guy and I winced, gritted my teeth, and laughed with him through the story. The author does an amazing job of weaving a fun, contemporary, and fictional story that goes to show people don't change that much- even across the globe.

In need a good break from reality or just a plain good story? Start this amazing series and be sucked right in.

Interview questions for A Little Bit of R&R

Tell us a bit about yourself

Well, I lived in Spain for 12 years as an adult which really helped me to write the Cantabria American School series, of which Bueno is the first book. I also love science and birding. And I love to read—often I’m devouring 3 or 4 books at a time. I love to travel. And I love to cook, but I don’t like following recipes.

When did you begin writing?

I have been writing poetry all my life but I began my novels in 2008, shortly after I retired from teaching.

Have you ever been discouraged in regard to your writing ability and if so, how did you get past it and move forward?

Yes, definitely. I almost gave up writing completely. But my husband was very encouraging, and then I stumbled on a wonderful blog by a talented writer and writing coach named Lauren Sapala. Her blog posts were uplifting and reminded me of the joy of writing.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

When the characters come alive and the novel writes itself—that’s my very favorite part. I’ll go into a scene expecting to write one thing and something completely different will occur. It’s magical.

What is your writing style? Do you like to outline or just write as you go?

I’ve changed. I used to just write as I went, but it made for a very messy and incoherent plot. Now I outline. I still give myself the freedom to deviate if needed, but then I document the deviations.

Do you have a favorite spot where you like to write?

No, though I do all my writing on the computer now.

What is something you've written that will never see the light of day?

Probably my poetry.

What's the hardest thing about writing for you?

Sometimes I’ll get stuck and not know where to go with a story—that’s really hard. I find, though, that if I keep returning to it and keep plodding along, I become unstuck.

What inspires you to write?

Goodness, I can’t NOT write now. What inspires me to breathe? What inspires me to open my eyes in the morning—it’s all kind of the same thing.

How many books have you written and which is your favorite?

I have written 4 books—the fourth will be published in just a few weeks (by March 2015). Usually, whatever I’m currently working on is my favorite. My newest book is called THE LAPTEV VIRUS and it’s about a large virus discovered in the Arctic which becomes a human pathogen. I’m very excited about it.

What are some of your favorite books?

The list is tremendously long! In the realm of general fiction, I love the Dickens books most of all. The funniest books are the Nursery Crime and Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde. I have read The Lord of the Rings at least 6 times in its entirety. And there are tons of other terrific books that have moved me. I use a shelf in my Goodreads profile to highlight the best books I’ve read.

What authors do you like to read?

Charles Dickens, Jasper Fforde, Alexander McCall-Smith, Liane Moriarty, JoJo Moyes, Anthony Doerr, Jeffrey Eugenides, etc.

What inspired you to write Bueno?

I felt like I had a story to tell. I was a teacher and an administrator in a small international school in Spain and I wanted to write about my experiences, but I also wanted to convey my love for Spain and the sense of adventure I felt when I lived there.

Would you say you relate to any of your characters? If so, which one and why?

Well, I kind of relate to bits and pieces of each of them—they’re my characters, after all. I mean, certainly some of them misbehave pretty badly, doing things I would never do, but that makes the story much more interesting.

This or that.

Sweet or Salty? Salty

Naughty or nice? Definitely nice. Too nice most of the time, which is why it’s fun to write about not nice—gives me a chance to live vicariously.

Cats or dogs? Dogs—I’m allergic to cats. Though I do watch an inordinate number of funny cat videos.

Vanilla or chocolate? Chocolate, preferably with nuts.

Wonderful news: Bueno is a semi-finalist in the Elixir Press Fiction Award competition of 2014!

I owe my early passion for writing to my high school English teacher, who, like one of the characters in my new series, was very inspiring. She believed in me and I've never forgotten that. I took a circuitous road toward authorship, working first as a researcher in the field of molecular biology, then as a science and math teacher, then as an administrator, and finally as a technical translator. As I progressed along the path of completing my novels, I swerved out and published a children's book, which 3-year-olds seem to love, and then returned to literary fiction, my first passion. My 11 years living in Spain also heavily influenced my desire to write. I loved my time there and wanted to share that beautiful world with everyone. I hope you enjoy my novels!

As any readers of our blog knows, I am a horror/zombie book lover. I'm a little hesitant with serial stories as I've started some the author never finishes, or feel like the book is simply too short. Not in this case! This was a nice and full start off to the story. It ends on a cliff hanger of course, but I felt the author did a great job of setting up the characters, their woes and life and deaths, and the progression of the story. A very good young adult zombie story, this should entertain the younger set that likes a bit of zombie groaning and gnawing with their teen angst.

The story flows through a regular day of Tabitha at work, to fighting the undead, to being holed up with her family and her life long crush. Many action packed, wincing moments leading to their escape from the home, mystery of how it all started, ends up with Tabitha's group suddenly with new folks. Foe? Friend? Who knows? Looking forward to finding out in the same book!

excerpt

I exhaled deeply as I finished scanning the last coupon. The woman gave me a sharp look of annoyance, as if I had no room for complaint. Really, what did she expect? Was I supposed to grovel and thank her for allowing me the honor of scanning her precious coupons ten minutes before closing time?

Apparently so. “You know, young lady, it wouldn't hurt you to smile at your customers and thank them when they offer you their coupons. I don't think I've ever had such poor customer service. I don't have to shop here, especially with this kind of attitude.” She was working herself up into a rage, her expression full of self-righteous indignation.

I didn't reply, but instead pushed the total button. Some of the customers in line groaned, while others shifted in impatience. They really didn't want to be further delayed by her rant. She slammed a hundred dollar bill down on the counter. “Where is your manager? I want to speak with him now.”

I pointed towards Jim, as he straightened his shoulders and attempted to look professional. I could only imagine the holier-than-thou attitude he would have as he sympathetically agreed with her. Around here, I could never do anything right, or so it seemed.

I didn't see anyone else standing around, though, willing to put up with his crap. If I didn't need the money so badly, I'd walk out the door faster than he could blink. I was tired of the humiliation and tired of being blamed for the lines, just because he was too tight to hire on adequate staff.

I was silent as I quickly made her change. What could any person say? She was mad due to reasons of her own, something that really didn't concern me. With one last glare, she huffed and moved on in his direction. She never made it, though.

It would have been worth the complaint and subsequent chewing out I would have received, if the events of the night just wouldn't have happened. I would later look back on it and pray that things had ended differently. You can't change events that are completely out of your control, though.

Even so, anything would have been preferable to that one moment when you find your reality has just been blown to pieces and would never be the same again. That's assuming you live to survive it.

She was halfway to Jim, her teased hairdo bouncing, when it happened. A loud, panicked scream tore through the night, originating somewhere from the parking lot in front of the store. Even through the thick glass, we could hear it loudly. It sounded like someone was being murdered. I immediately stopped scanning, turning in an attempt to see what was happening.

A body slammed against the glass, his face and palms pressed to the surface. It was a horrid sight. His pupils were red and crazed, his face extremely pale and dirty. Dark red blood was smeared across his cheeks and chin. The man stood still for a moment, just watching us with his crazy eyes. Something reanimated him. He slid his palms down the clear, clean glass, leaving a trail of bloody streaks.

I reviewed "Everything is Everything" by Pepper Pace from the "Scandalous Heroes Box Set."

** Four Stars **

I'm not usually one for stories set in the recent past. This novel takes place in the 1970s-1980s in the poor section of time, or the "ghetto" as noted by the book. The first part takes place in Vanessa's early teens, living on the upper side with her mother who works two jobs. She has her school, homework, best friend who's her cousin, and a gang of girls to hang/protect her. She meets and crushes on the only white fella, Scotty, whose hard core older half brother runs the drug trade. It follows their ups and downs in the crazy hard, but sometimes sweet life in their neighborhood.
Second part covers the later teens to early adulthood of Vanessa turning 18. Living with another relative due to a past tragedy, her life has been completely separate from those she grew with. Attending an arts school, having an amazing voice and an amazing future don't stop Vanessa and Scotty's love from happening all over again.
Seriously sad, true, and no holds on the reality, I surprising could not put this book down. It's a definite portrayal of what it must of have been to live in the neighborhood, trying to get out from a cycle of poverty, and loving someone who is outside the norm. Vanessa’s innocent and gentle spirit shine through the book as a backdrop to Scotty’s desperate survival for goodness. Reader, if you like reality and don't mind learning how "everything is everything" for real, pick up this novel!

When Tank tries to rekindle the relationship with Eminence, she has to wonder

The Wrath of Michael ~ Serenity King

Michael Alesi is not looking for anything other than a good time. He works hard and plays even harder. But

after being summoned to the home of his cousin, Michael is blindsided by the feisty, Kendra Washington.

Kendra is beautiful and sassy, and she seems to want nothing to do with Michael. That is fine with Michael—

he doesn’t do relationships and he has plenty of business and social opportunities to keep him busy. Then he

witnesses Kendra’s life being put in danger by a nasty crime. He comes to her rescue and, as he gets to

know her, he decides that maybe a committed relationship isn’t so bad after all.

Just as they are feeling their way toward a relationship, a whirlwind of deadly events sends life spiraling out

of control for both Michael and Kendra. Will they be able to find shelter in each other’s arms, or will the

demons of both the past and the present keep them apart forever?
