I can be a bit of a fantasy junky at time and usually prefer YA or adult fantasy. I can be a bit leery of middle grade or fantasy geared toward a younger set. This book? Nerp. This novel can appeal to all ages though the author states it's targeted for some of the younger folk. The blurb perfectly explains the book. Lily is an excellent example of a vulnerable, but very strong young lady in the face of challenges. The supporting characters are appealing. Their backgrounds, personalities, and roles in the book are clear and stated. The fantasy concept of magic, gods, and mischief are absolutely present and fun. Many of the elements in the book such as loss, courage, and growing (in a physical and mental sense) can ring true with any audience. The plot is fairly easy to understand, but the end action caught me in surprise. I am going to happily pass this book onto my nephew who is 11 years old. The fighting and adventure scenes are on par with a Harry Potty or Percy Jackson. There is nothing inappropriate in this lovely novel. I can absolutely see this book appealing to girls, boys, or adult version of kids, like myself. ;) For unsure or wary readers, this would be a great introduction to the fantasy realm and a story even older kiddos could read with their parents.

The cover is gorgeous! Mr. Felton illustrated it all :)

Note: The author provided a review copy in return for an honest review. This did not affect my opinion in any way.

T.C.R. Felton is a Houston, Texas based artist that graduated with honors from the University of Houston with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. He is married and has one child with another on the way this year.

"Lightsreach" came about naturally after a conversation with fellow painter, Benjamin Walton. T.C.R. painted a series of illustrations in his studio that came completely out of the blue. There were castles, dragons, and lights and none of them were intended to be connected. They were just spur of the moment painting with no plan or thought put into them before the paint hit the canvas. They each just came from the brush strokes.

Ben came into the studio and asked how they were all related, as they shared similar themes. T.C.R. then sat down and wrote a few pages that ultimately became "Lightsreach," the final piece in the series of paintings.

Rolling right into the action from book one, Ms. Smith continues with a great fantasy series! Amelia is captive with the enemies and playing a game of love with their price while Aiden gets in touch with the beast inside and outside. Amelia's BFF pops up causing more cheerful destruction. Amelia soon learns her family's secrets and gets a close touch with a personal journal from her mother's past that reveals more than she can ever know! Facing down the traitor and evil queen, Amelia must come face to face with her gifted (cursed) powers and get them under control before she destroys those she hates and loves. Aiden comes into his own destiny and is on his own path to free Amelia, along with the Animages. Discovering the awful fates of those the queen has deemed not worthy of human treatment, it leads to an ultimate showdown or powers and discovering love.

Very action oriented and character driven, I was drawn into the story. Found it hard to swipe my finger quick enough across the Kindle to turn a page the last 20%. Romance, lots of nail-biting adventure, and self discovery kept the story fluid. Of course, it ends on a cliff hanger.. Gah!

She grew to love books honestly, having a mom that read voraciously and instilled that same love in her. Writing a book had never been an aspiration, but suddenly the story was there and couldn't be stopped. When she isn't working on, or thinking about, her books, Stormy's favorite places include bar patios, live music shows, her yoga mat or anywhere she can relax with her husband or girlfriends.

Book Review & Giveaway: Romeow and Juliet (Whales and Tails Mystery #1) by Kathi Daley

review

Huzzah! A new cozy mystery series by Kathi Daley to delve into! More kitties... more bodies... more mysteries! Caitlin is a twenty something that lives off a quaint and tourist island of the San Juan Islands off the coast of Washington State. She runs a kitty sanctuary and lives on her own, sharing land with a feisty aunt who has fallen ill recently while running for a local political spot. Caitlin ends up juggling a new tomcat who is serenading a local grumpy neighbor's show cat, a dead body, and an old lover.

Caitlin is a very sweet, caring, and humorous gal. Loved this story and how the town and its residents are quickly and lovingly built into this new series. Adored the side stories with her elderly neighbors and the not so silent town feuds. The great who-dun-it question and sudden, possible love triangle Caitlin finds herself just added to the charm of the story.

Delve into this new series with gusto! A much meowy romance.

Book Review & Giveaway: Alaskan Alliance (Zoe Donovan Mystery Book 12) by Kathi Daley

review

As with all the Zoe mystery books, I enjoyed this easy read. Zoe is delivering a search and rescue dog to an Alaskan town with her fiance Zak. Meeting members of the rescue team, they find new friends at the quaint and quirky local tavern. Each member has their own story, some their own mystery. Zoe and Zak end up boarding in the local bed and breakfast. Per Zoe's lot in life, she finds a dead body. More pop up, or are dug up, literally. Who exactly was Mr. Dead Guy and what the heck was he doing in that same town? Suddenly in a rush to find a lost child, figure out a past romance, and in a fight for her life, Zoe is in for a rather chilly visit to Alaska.

Kathi's book are always fun and easy to delve into. The characters are nice to be reacquainted with each month. I typically devour the new Zoe novels, but this one was a bit harder for me to get into. Wonderful story, but it was a bit slow in some parts. But the action eventually catches up with the plot and off it went!

Book Review, Interview & Giveaway: Die Again: A Rizzoli & Isles Novel by Tess Gerritsen

review

Holy moley cannoli! This book was freaking amazing! Capitol A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. I could hardly put it down and mostly grunted when someone asked a question while I was reading it. First book by Tess Gerritsen I have ever read; I've never seen the TNT show "Rizzoli & Isles" based on the series either. I'm not sure what kept me so long...

The story focuses in Boston and Africa on differing timelines. Millie and her snobby author boyfriend are on a safari with other folks. It goes from bad to worse. People start to disappear and their entrails reappear after supposed animal attacks. Suspecting their vigilant guide, the remaining members go mad and the body count goes even higher. The only survivor is found weeks later stumbling out of the bush. The gruesome tale is told throughout the current events unfolding with Detective Rizzoli and medical examiner Isles. And yep, you guessed it, they tie together. It's madness!

The plot just gets wilder, weirder, and hair raising. Local taxidermist is the first (so they think, dum dum dum) murder. A suspected home invasion is the second. Previously unsolved murders, where the victims are strung up, gutted, and marked with three claw marks in two distinct places pop up. Tying all the bodies, murders, a possible cult tie in, lions, tigers, missing snow leopard pelt, and missing persons is quite a task. It's quite a zoo of a case (pun intended!). The lone survivor of the African safari is brought in to lure out the least expected murderer.

The book starts and ends on a climax. I was fairly catatonic and afraid to turn the last few pages to find out what the crap was going down in this twisted road of a mystery thriller. Perfect ending, perfect piecing together of the puzzle... ahh, was very satisfying. Loved the main characters and the awesomely detailed and methodically descriptions completed by the author.

Pick up this book. Get lost and freaked out in it. It will do a mystery lover very, very good. Ms. Gerritsen has a new die hard fan.

interview

Tell us a bit about yourself

I'm the author of 26 novels, including a crime series featuring Detective Jane Rizzoli and ME Maura Isles, on which the TV show "Rizzoli & Isles" is based. Over the course of my 30-year career I've written medical thrillers, historical suspense, crime novels, and romantic suspense. I'm also a medical doctor, although I haven't practiced medicine in decades.

When did you begin writing?

At age seven. That's when I knew I wanted to be a writer.

Have you ever been discouraged in regard to your writing ability and if so, how did you get past it and move forward?

I'm constantly discouraged. With every book, I find myself questioning my ability to tell a story. I think it's part of writing the best book you can -- you never settle for less than your best effort, and it may involve multiple drafts. I've sometimes gone through six or seven revisions before I feel ready to send the manuscript to my editor.

I also go through plot block with almost every manuscript, where I don't know what happens next, or I don't know how to tie the disparate plot elements together. The best cure for that is a long drive, or a day or two lying on the couch staring at the ceiling, until the "A ha!" moment happens.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

I love the very beginning of a project, when the ideas come flying at me, and I'm trying to see how they all relate to each other. It's before the hard work of writing actually begins.

I also love doing the research -- finding out enticing new facts, and delving into a topic I know nothing about.

What is your writing style? Do you like to outline or just write as you go?

I don't do a formal outline, more like a few jotted sentences of how the story begins. Generally, I don't know much more than about a third of the plot, and I make up the rest as I go along. I've tried to outline in the past, but always ended up veering away from it, because I get better ideas as I move into the story. It leads to a chaotic first draft, and I often get stuck midway through, trying to come up with ways to make the mystery fit together. But if I'm surprised by the story, I think my readers are as well.

Do you have a favorite spot where you like to write?

I have an office over my garage where I write. It has a view of the sea, lots of light, and a huge desk where I can spread out all my papers. It's the only place where I compose my first drafts.

What is something you've written that will never see the light of day?

I have bits and pieces of earlier manuscripts that never got completed, but I keep them around. You never know when a scene can be recycled into another book.

What is your writer food?

Whatever's left over in the refrigerator from last night's dinner.

What's the hardest thing about writing for you?

Getting to the end of the first draft. I'm never sure what the story's about until I finish that draft. Another difficult point is the first revision, when I look at that first draft, see all the flaws, and wonder if I'll ever be able to fix it.

What inspires you to write?

I find ideas everywhere -- the news, my interests, travel. I never know when something strikes me as a great idea for a story. I'm very clued in to emotional impacts. If I learn something that scares me or upsets me, that's usually a great topic for a book.

How many books have you written and which is your favorite?

I've just finished writing my 26th book. My favorite is probably GRAVITY, about a disaster aboard the International Space Station. Because of the highly technical details, requiring months of research, that book was a challenge to write, and I was terrified I wouldn't be able to pull it off. But I did.

What are some of your favorite books?

My reading tastes are eclectic. I love historicals, non-fiction, fantasy. Looking back at the books that have stayed with me through the years, I would count JRR Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy as my absolute favorite.

What authors do you like to read?

I'm a big fan of Philippa Gregory, who makes history come alive.

What inspired you to write Die Again?

A few years ago, my husband and I went on safari in South Africa. One day in the bush, we had a surprise encounter with a leopard, and our bush guide essentially saved our lives. It brought home how dangerous the bush is, and how much you have to trust your guide. Then I thought: what if you trust the wrong man? What if the most dangerous creature in the bush walks on two legs? What if the guide who meets your plane at the remote landing strip isn't the man he says he is? That inspired the initial premise: seven tourists fly into Botswana, drive off into the wilderness, and are never seen again.

If you could choose a dream cast for DIE AGAIN, who would you pick?

I think the best cast for my poor seven tourists would all be unknowns!

Would you say you relate to any of your characters? If so, which one and why?

I'm definitely like Maura Isles. We're both medically trained, we're both introverts, and we both want to believe there's a logical explanation for everything.

This or that.

Sweet or Salty?

Salty.

Naughty or nice?

Nice.

Cats or dogs?

Cats AND dogs.

Vanilla or chocolate?

Chocolate.

If you were deserted on an island, which author would you want to be stranded with?

Lee Child. I think he would keep me well entertained.

*** 5/5 Stars! ***

"Bueno" is the first of a three book series about Harvey, an American, and his tenacious and sometimes naive leadership as a headmaster in Spain of an international school. Harvey is an extremely likeable and pluckable character who battles through a new culture and a school bogged down with personal politics and favoritism.

I was immediately drawn into the story and had a hard time putting it down. I grew up with a ton of different cultures here near Houston, Texas, but the international school scene was new to me. Being transported to that world and being dumped straight into the struggles and drama that Harvey faced was eye opening. The "brujahs" (witches in Spanish) is a word, an excellent one at that, used to describe the clandestine group of tenured staff at the school that rule its inner workings. Harvey is hired on tentatively and strives to do what's best for all involved and steps on some grumpy toes. The story goes through his personal losses, the sheer nastiness and lengths that people will go to keep change out, and his blossoming relationship.

Harvey is an extremely likeable guy and I winced, gritted my teeth, and laughed with him through the story. The author does an amazing job of weaving a fun, contemporary, and fictional story that goes to show people don't change that much- even across the globe.

In need a good break from reality or just a plain good story? Start this amazing series and be sucked right in.

Interview questions for A Little Bit of R&R

Tell us a bit about yourself

Well, I lived in Spain for 12 years as an adult which really helped me to write the Cantabria American School series, of which Bueno is the first book. I also love science and birding. And I love to read—often I’m devouring 3 or 4 books at a time. I love to travel. And I love to cook, but I don’t like following recipes.

When did you begin writing?

I have been writing poetry all my life but I began my novels in 2008, shortly after I retired from teaching.

Have you ever been discouraged in regard to your writing ability and if so, how did you get past it and move forward?

Yes, definitely. I almost gave up writing completely. But my husband was very encouraging, and then I stumbled on a wonderful blog by a talented writer and writing coach named Lauren Sapala. Her blog posts were uplifting and reminded me of the joy of writing.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

When the characters come alive and the novel writes itself—that’s my very favorite part. I’ll go into a scene expecting to write one thing and something completely different will occur. It’s magical.

What is your writing style? Do you like to outline or just write as you go?

I’ve changed. I used to just write as I went, but it made for a very messy and incoherent plot. Now I outline. I still give myself the freedom to deviate if needed, but then I document the deviations.

Do you have a favorite spot where you like to write?

No, though I do all my writing on the computer now.

What is something you've written that will never see the light of day?

Probably my poetry.

What's the hardest thing about writing for you?

Sometimes I’ll get stuck and not know where to go with a story—that’s really hard. I find, though, that if I keep returning to it and keep plodding along, I become unstuck.

What inspires you to write?

Goodness, I can’t NOT write now. What inspires me to breathe? What inspires me to open my eyes in the morning—it’s all kind of the same thing.

How many books have you written and which is your favorite?

I have written 4 books—the fourth will be published in just a few weeks (by March 2015). Usually, whatever I’m currently working on is my favorite. My newest book is called THE LAPTEV VIRUS and it’s about a large virus discovered in the Arctic which becomes a human pathogen. I’m very excited about it.

What are some of your favorite books?

The list is tremendously long! In the realm of general fiction, I love the Dickens books most of all. The funniest books are the Nursery Crime and Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde. I have read The Lord of the Rings at least 6 times in its entirety. And there are tons of other terrific books that have moved me. I use a shelf in my Goodreads profile to highlight the best books I’ve read.

What authors do you like to read?

Charles Dickens, Jasper Fforde, Alexander McCall-Smith, Liane Moriarty, JoJo Moyes, Anthony Doerr, Jeffrey Eugenides, etc.

What inspired you to write Bueno?

I felt like I had a story to tell. I was a teacher and an administrator in a small international school in Spain and I wanted to write about my experiences, but I also wanted to convey my love for Spain and the sense of adventure I felt when I lived there.

Would you say you relate to any of your characters? If so, which one and why?

Well, I kind of relate to bits and pieces of each of them—they’re my characters, after all. I mean, certainly some of them misbehave pretty badly, doing things I would never do, but that makes the story much more interesting.

This or that.

Sweet or Salty? Salty

Naughty or nice? Definitely nice. Too nice most of the time, which is why it’s fun to write about not nice—gives me a chance to live vicariously.

Cats or dogs? Dogs—I’m allergic to cats. Though I do watch an inordinate number of funny cat videos.

Vanilla or chocolate? Chocolate, preferably with nuts.

Wonderful news: Bueno is a semi-finalist in the Elixir Press Fiction Award competition of 2014!

I owe my early passion for writing to my high school English teacher, who, like one of the characters in my new series, was very inspiring. She believed in me and I've never forgotten that. I took a circuitous road toward authorship, working first as a researcher in the field of molecular biology, then as a science and math teacher, then as an administrator, and finally as a technical translator. As I progressed along the path of completing my novels, I swerved out and published a children's book, which 3-year-olds seem to love, and then returned to literary fiction, my first passion. My 11 years living in Spain also heavily influenced my desire to write. I loved my time there and wanted to share that beautiful world with everyone. I hope you enjoy my novels!

This is my second book to review by this author. I LOVE her writing style and stories. They are fairy tale sweet but lifelike in their realism and presentation. In this novel, she mixes up traditional fairy tales and delivers them on a lovely platter of lyrical fantasy.

Jack, Jacqueline, is our main hero. This chick is sweet, vulnerable, and kind. She also has an uber power hidden within herself that is unleashed once she sets out on an adventure to escape her abusive home life. Giants, magic, princes (selfish and not), inn keepers, a rideable raven... and our lovely protagonist is in for a whole lot more than she bargained for. Love, adventure, sorrow, and discovering her true family ends for a happily tied up ever after.

Please, if you're a lover of fantasy or anything in a similar genre, pick up Ms. Huchton's books. They make for excellent reads and her newest release does not fail to entertain!

excerpt

It took my vision a few moments to adjust to the sudden brightness, but when I did, I couldn’t believe the sight in front of me. Stunned, I staggered backwards, all but falling down as my gaze drifted up from the base of the enormous plant that had sprung up overnight.
The bottom was easily twenty feet wide to either side of me, with massive leaves bursting from curled vines thicker than a man’s shoulders were broad. It seemed to be not a single plant, but three twisted around each other, leading up and up into the sky. I followed the trail of leaves spiraling around it like a giant staircase until I lost sight of them in the clouds obscuring the top.
What, by the spirits, was that thing, and how had it come to be there so instantaneously? What enchantment conjured it? Even more, how long would it remain? Eventually someone would notice it and ask all sorts of questions, and I wouldn’t have any answers for them.
I paused, hitting on one word swirling in my mind: enchantment. In running from the wolves, I’d dropped the beans. While I couldn’t prove it myself, I was fairly certain they were some sort of magic. Therefore, the only reasonable explanation, even though it was the most outlandish thing I’d ever entertained, was that the plant before me was the result of the three beans being exposed to soil and water.
“Either you’ve hit your head very hard, lost your mind completely, or found something amazing, Jack,” I said out loud, hoping that talking through the development might bring me some clarity. “As you’re not in terrible pain, let’s discount the first one for the time being.”
My feet moved without my thinking, and I carried on my monologue, trying to puzzle it out. “You might be talking to yourself, but nothing up until this moment has ever given you cause to doubt the reliability of your brain. That leaves one option.”
I stopped walking, marveling at the turn of events. As I watched, a single leaf uncurled from the base of the humongous beanstalk, spreading out on the ground before me like a carpet. Was it a greeting? That leaf led to another slightly above it, and a third and fourth after that. Each was perfectly positioned, one leading to the next.
If ever I’d been given an invitation to anything, that was it.
Not entirely sold on it, I wandered back to where I’d woken, retrieving my pack and cap from between the layers of leaves. The hat was a bit soggy when I placed it on my head, but I was sure it would dry quickly with the heat of day already growing rapidly. Again at the leaf that unfurled before me, I lifted my gaze up, following it once more into the clouds.
“I wonder how high it goes?”
The thought of being at such an elevation, looking out over everyone and everything, cemented my decision. People climbed mountains only to say they’d done it. They built larger and larger structures for no better reason than gaining a closer perspective on the stars. Why should I be any different? How many could say they’d encountered a plant such as this, and how regretful would they feel for having passed up the opportunity?
Tentatively, I set my foot upon the leaf, unsure if it would even hold me. It gave some, but easily supported what little weight I carried. A large man might find it impassable, but for me, a girl of sixteen with years of hunger under her belt, I’d have no cause to worry.
Well, no cause pending the strength of the greenery held out all the way to the top.
As many times as I’d looked to the sky, never before had it seemed so full of promise.
With a firm nod, I started up. After all, what was the worst that could happen? If nothing else, I’d finally know what it felt like to fly.
