Ramblings by Ren and some of my fav books :-)

Hey guys, Ren here!! I wanted to take some time to write about what's going on with me. I have not been well for the past three months and it has taken a huge toll on my reading and reviews. We have a lot of dedicated readers for our blog and I am so grateful for you all! I would like to introduce you to our two newest reviewers, Michelle and Autumn. They were so kind to offer to help with some reviews that I have been behind on.

I also thought it would be cool to introduce you to some of my favorite books. I have been posting about 1 review a week so I thought I would add something different today.  Alyssa, a fellow reader friend, gave me the idea for this post. I thought I would have some fun with it.

I think I would be here forever if I named off my favs list. These are my top picks. I hope you will check them out and enjoy them as much as I have!!

Lets start with the Dreamline Series by David Mayer.

I can't say enough great things about this amazing series!! Dave was my very first review request on the blog and I am truly honored to have read such fantastic books. I am anxiously awaiting the third book in the series.  These books really get your noggin going!! You can read an interview with the author HERE. Click these titles to read my reviews: Reswyt & Nekhet.

Blurb for Reswyt: In this spellbinding new paranormal fantasy novel, Sabine Jahn has more than an average teen's share of problems. She’s been forced to leave behind everything she knew growing up in Oregon to start high school as a transfer student in California. She’s lost her father to an automobile accident, and her grandfather, preeminent Egyptologist Daniel Jahn, has mysteriously disappeared. She hasn’t slept in months, and no one can tell her why. And now, as she sits in detention for dozing off in class again, she finds herself drifting from her Cameron High detention hall to a vast, eerie forest where immense astral wolves roam past her.

Sabine has discovered a way to enter a realm where dreaming minds appear nightly as noble hawks, fierce wolves, and stalwart bears. She learns that the wild, beautiful world she has found is slowly becoming corrupted by the acts of a dead mind trapped within it. Now, the fate of that realm – and our own world – rests in the hands of Sabine, a long-dead French soldier, an Egyptian god, and a mysterious, profoundly gifted boy trapped between worlds.

Believe it or not, I have not always been an avid reader. I was one of those people that just hasn't found her genre yet. This is the series that made me fall in love with reading again. The Immortals series by Alyson Noel was great. I picked up Evermore off of the sale cart from the library that I work at and it was a done deal! I finished the entire series in two weeks. That is quite a feat for me considering I work two jobs and had a 2 year old to chase after. I was a little disappointed with the ending, but I still enjoyed it.

Blurb for Evermore: After a horrible accident claims the lives of her family, sixteen-year-old Ever Bloom can see people's auras, hear their thoughts, and know someones entire life story by touching them. Going out of her way to avoid human contact to suppress her abilities, she has been branded a freak at her new high school — but everything changes when she meets Damen Auguste.
Damen is gorgeous, exotic and wealthy. He's the only one who can silence the noise and random energy in her head - wielding a magic so intense, it's as though he can peer straight into her soul. As Ever is drawn deeper into his enticing world of secrets and mystery, she's left with more questions than answers. And she has no idea just who he really is - or what he is. The only thing she knows to be true is that she's falling deeply and helplessly in love with him.

The Eden Trilogy by Nicole Williams is one of my favorite Indie series!! Before I knew what an indie novel was, Amazon would recommend books based on my ratings of the books that I have read. When I saw that the first one was free, I snatched it up! Needless to say, I gobbled that up in a day and I was hooked! It really is a great paranormal romance that I think everyone should read!! Oh and how could I forget?! Patrick, the brother in the series, has his own series out!! I loved the first one, Fissure, now I'm waiting for the next one!

Blurb for Eternal Eden: College sophomore Bryn Dawson is a self-proclaimed poster child for normal. However, the day William Hayward enters her life, normalcy is the last thing Bryn will be able to count on if she wants to be with him. Too mysterious and appealing to be good for a girl, Bryn feels drawn to him in a way that seems out of her control—as if fate is orchestrating it.

Despite every red flag and warning siren going off in her head telling her not to, Bryn falls hard for William, knowing he’s categorically different from anyone she’s ever met. She never imagined how right she was. When William takes her deeper into the rabbit hole of his world, Bryn must decide just how much she is willing to sacrifice to be with him, knowing no matter what, fate always finds a way to have the last laugh.

Spinning a new twist on star-crossed lovers, Eternal Eden will put Bryn through a gauntlet of turmoil, challenging her to find the power within herself to become the heroine in her own story

My first recommendation from Amazon was Significance by Shelly Crane. Shelly writes some amazing stories. I may have never know about her books if I didn't buy a Kindle. I loved the Significance series but I'd have to say that her Collide series is my favorite. Did I mention that Significance is being made into a movie? I didn't? Shame on me :-) https://www.facebook.com/pages/Significance-The-Movie/410300789024925?fref=ts

Blurb for Significance: Maggie is a seventeen year old girl who's had a bad year. She was smart and on track but then her mom left, her dad is depressed, she's graduating, barely, and her boyfriend of almost three years dumped her for a college football scholarship. Lately she thinks life is all about hanging on by a thread and is gripping tight with everything she has.
Then she meets Caleb. She saves his life and instantly knows there's something about him that's intriguing but she is supposed to be on her way to a date with his cousin. But things change when they touch, sparks ignite. Literally.

They imprint with each other and she sees their future life together flash before her eyes. She learns that not only is she his soul mate, and can feel his heartbeat in her chest, but there is a whole other world of people with gifts and abilities that she never knew existed. She herself is experiencing supernatural changes unlike anything she's ever felt before and she needs the touch of his skin to survive.

Now, not only has her dad come out of his depression to be a father again, and a pain as well, but Caleb's enemies know he's imprinted and are after Maggie to stop them both from gaining their abilities and take her from him.

Can Caleb save her or will they be forced to live without each other after just finding one another?

Blurb for Collide: Sherry has always known there was something out there. She's eighteen, works for a tabloid newspaper in Chicago and has a brother, Danny who is a lazy mooch. They live a pretty normal dull life with hippie parents and a normal existence Then the moon disappears and people start to go missing only to reappear later, but different. Sherry has an abusive ex-boyfriend who shows up and claims to be one of these beings that have been showing up around the world. He's no longer the same person in that body. He tells her he has come to protect her and her brother and takes her underground, against her will to save her, where they meet others like them. She begins to unravel the truth about Merrick, about what he's really doing here, about the way he looks at her, about the crazy dangerous world they live in. Can he convince her that he's here to help? Will she like what she finds when she opens up to the truth? Will he be the one to love her when everyone else has failed her? Will he be able to protect her?

Abbi Glines is another indie author that I came to love. My first book by her was The Vincent Boys. It is more of a mature YA and it was great! I have also read 2 out of three in The Existence Trilogy and 2 from the Sea Breeze series. Big congrats to her on being picked up by Simon Pulse, an imprint of Simon & Schuster!

Blurb for The Vincent Boys: There was something wicked about Beau that drew me to him. What was wrong with me? Why did I want to sin so badly

Ashton is getting tired of being good, of impressing her parents and playing ideal girlfriend to Sawyer Vincent. Sawyer is perfect, a regular Prince Charming, but when he leaves town for the summer, it’s his cousin Beau who catches Ashton’s eye. Beau is the sexiest guy she’s ever seen, and even though he’s dangerous, Ashton is drawn to him.

Beau loves his cousin like a brother, so the last thing he wants to do is make a move on Sawyer’s girl. Ashton is off-limits, absolutely. That’s why he does his best to keep his distance, even though he’s been in love with her forever. When Ashton wants to rekindle their childhood friendship in Sawyer’s absence, Beau knows he should say no.

Ashton and Beau don’t want to hurt Sawyer. But the more they try to stay away from each other, the more intense their urges become. It’s getting way too hard to resist....

Preservation by Rachael Wade was one of my first Adult contemporary romances. I absolutely loved it and think everyone needs to read it. I have actually hooked a couple of my friends on it :-) Rachael Wade is also a huge supporter of my blog and helped me out when I first started. I am also stoked about her announcement that there will be two more books following Preservation!!!!! SQUEEEE

Fear is sabotage’s sweetest weapon.

Kate has no time for meaningless romantic charades, and definitely no time for hot college professors who are full of themselves and smitten with her. Constantly battling eviction notices, tuition she can’t afford, and a sick, dependent mother, the last thing she needs is to be distracted with someone else’s complicated baggage.

When she stumbles into Ryan Campbell’s creative writing class, he is only “Mr. Campbell” to her, until Ryan finds himself captivated by her writing and she is forced to face their mutual attraction. His cocky know-it-all syndrome is enough to send her running in the other direction, and his posse of female admirers and playboy reputation are enough to squander any odds in her favor.

But underneath Ryan’s abrasive facade is something to behold, and she can’t stay away for long. Ryan and Kate must decide who they’re willing to become and fight against their former selves if they want to make things work. That’s if academia, vicious vixens, old skeletons, and their own mastery at self-destruction don’t pummel their efforts first.

My Review

I don't think my review will do this book any justice. Yes, I know, I say that quite often. I'll start with the two main characters. Ella went away to school to try and get away from horrible memories at home. She changed her entire image by dressing like, what I would call, a "preppy girl." You know the type...wears a lot of pink with skirts and what not. A total 180 from her old look. She used to have a grunge/goth look with the attitude to go with it. She comes back to her home town after 8 months with no contact with anyone, including her best friend, Micha. Oh, Micha. I'll get back to Ella because I'm completely obsessed with Micha. Micha has been searching and pinning for Ella since she disappeared. Like Ella, his life has not been a walk in the park. His father left him and his mother when he was just a young boy. They both have baggage. When Ella returns, Micha almost doesn't recognize her. He's determined to bring the old Ella back. And oh God, that lip ring. Can I have Micha please??

 My thoughts...

OH LORD...how do I begin to describe how much I loved this book? It was recommended to me by fellow book blogger, Delphina. I was stoked when Jessica Sorensen asked if I would be interested in reviewing it. I have been hearing such great things and I was worried that it wouldn't live up to the hype. I have not read such an awesome Adult Contemporary Romance since Preservation by Rachael Wade. This book was absolutely fantastic!! When I wasn't reading it, I was thinking about it. Ella's spunk reminds me a lot like myself. Character growth makes me a happy camper and Ella finally started to work out her issues and be herself.

Jessica Sorensen normally writes YA paranormal. I'm a huge YA fan because it's all about anticipation. I find that adult novels can be a little much when it comes to sex. I like the build up and think it makes for a better read. Jessica frickin delivered!! There was so much sexual tension between Ella and Micha that you could cut that shit with a butter knife! I swear, it's like Jessica was sitting there with a $100 bill on a fishing pole just dangling it in my face. Whenever I would go to grab it, she would snatch it away leaving me feeling wanting. HOLY HELL, this book was smokin' I can't say enough about it. I also love that it was written in alternating POV's. I loved reading what Micha had to say :-) I am so excited that there will be another book!! Needless to say, I will be a forever fan of Jessica's! If you have not read it yet, you need to.

Review: The Accidental Siren by Jake Vander Ark

Young Adult Paranormal Romance

Mara Lynn is the most beautiful girl in the world. James Parker is the ordinary boy who discovers her power.

The Accidental Siren depicts the joys and consequences of young love as Mara and James meet, shoot a movie, fend off bullies, and explore the potential of infinite beauty.

Source: Received the book from the author in exchange for an honest review. Did not receive any payment for review.

My Review

Okay...I usually like to write a synopsis with my review but I'm feeling quite incompetent right now. Why is it that really awesome books always turn me into a bumbling idiot? I really enjoyed this book. It's written as James' memoir and he writes about the time that he met Mara, who is the siren in this book. I feel like James' character was well written. He really sounds like a 12 year old and I find it refreshing. I notice too often with other books that characters' voices don't always match their age.  The development of each character made me feel like I knew them.  I like knowing more about the rest of the characters instead of just the main ones.

The story line was good. At first I thought it was a little drawn out,  but I realized at the end that it was all necessary. This was more of a "young" romance novel. If you're looking for steamy, this isn't the book for you.  I would have liked more of the paranormal aspect. There were some major turn of events at the end that I did not see coming...especially the last paragraph. Overall, it was a good read and I definitely recommend it. This is totally unrelated to my rating of the book but I couldn't imagine Mara as a blonde. I kept picturing her as a raven haired beauty. I had to constantly yell at myself and say "hey, that's not right."
This face pretty much sums up my reaction LOL.

Tour Review & Excerpt: Chocolate Aftertaste by Liz Grace Davis

Adult Contemporary Romance

At her pre-wedding dinner, Nora Darkin, the daughter of a wealthy entrepreneur, discovers her fiancé is not the man she thought he was. As her father hoists his glass to toast them, she makes an announcement: there will be no wedding to her father's right-hand man.

Due to the fresh rift driven between her and her father, Nora escapes to the quaint town of Dreara. Determined to live her life her own way, she makes new friends and pursues her lifelong desire of becoming a chef. Ethan Danes, a neighbour with his own broken heart, helps soothe hers.

Just as Nora discovers what it means to be happy, and she begins to fall in love with Ethan, a woman from his past re-enters his life…

Nora turned her attention back to the reality in front of her. She hated arguments; sometimes she wished she could hide somewhere, just wait them out. Unfortunately, life was not like that.

She lifted her eyes to meet Liam’s. The ice in his eyes had not melted. She dropped her gaze.

Instead of flirting with her appetite, the large marinated tiger prawns made her stomach queasy, and the oriental noodles looked like neglected yarn left out in the rain. From the way he dissected his steak, Liam’s appetite was just fine. She gritted her teeth as his knife scraped the porcelain plate.

Unable to bear the silence between them, she leaned forward and whispered, “I hate it when you ignore me.”

“What do you want me to say?” He chewed the last of his food and waved for the waiter. “We’re done.”

The waiter nodded and scuttled over to remove their plates.

When the waiter was out of earshot, Nora hissed through clenched teeth, “I wasn’t done.”

Liam took a swig of water, probably wishing it were something stronger. “You didn’t look like you were hungry.”

“Stop treating me like a child,” she snapped.

“Stop acting like one.”

Nora’s cheeks heated. She contained her anger with difficulty. “That’s really insensitive.”

“What do you want from me, Nora?” A vein pulsed in his neck. “What exactly do you want me to say?”

“Say you want me to be happy.” Her eyes brimmed. “Don’t ask me to get rid of my best friend.”

He loosened his tie—and then slammed his fist on the table, knocking over Nora’s glass of water. The silver stream raced straight for her lap.

The waiter appeared as if from nowhere to replace the white tablecloth with a new one. Nora forced a smile and whispered an apology. The waiter nodded, and a minute later he left.

Ignoring the curious looks they got from the other diners, she dabbed at the moisture on her black jeans. “You can’t always explode every time I refuse to do what you want.”

Liam ignored her. “Ask to pay. I want to leave.”

Nora flinched, but abided. Paying wasn’t so bad—so long as it was fair. On their first and second date, he
paid. On their third and a few more after that, they went Dutch. After one year, he asked her to pay for an occasional meal until it became an unspoken arrangement between them. The only thing Liam had paid for himself in three years was her engagement ring.

My Review

I'd have to say that I am a little torn on my rating for this book. It held my interest up until about 70% of the book. I'll start with what I liked about the book. Nora has always done what her father wanted her to do. She broke off her relationship with the first man she had ever loved because her father didn't approve of him. She later meets Liam, a man who works for her father. They soon become engaged and he starts to show his true colors. Finally standing up for herself, she leaves Liam the day before their wedding. This was the first step she took in finding her independence. I thought for sure that she would stay with him to make her father happy.

Next, she decides to get away from town and go to Dreara. Some time away can give her time to think about what she really wants. She makes some new friendships and even meets a new guy named Ethan. They have both been scarred by love and aren't ready to take their friendship to the next level....yet. Ethan encourages Nora to go to cooking school. One of Nora's lifelong dreams was to learn to cook and open her own restaurant. Nora shows such tremendous growth throughout the story. I will tell you that she does eventually start a relationship with Ethan, but I will leave it at that.

Now for my gripes...

I can't tell you much without spoiling the story. I feel that there were too many conflicts towards the end. I understand why they were there. They were beneficial in turning the story around. I was glad that she worked things out with her father but I feel like she turned into an indecisive teenager at the end. It was a lot of back and forth and it really turned me off. I seriously wanted to throw something. The romance was a bit tame and I would have liked more of the swoon factor.

Review: Stalk Me by Jillian Dodd

YA Contemporary Romance(Mature)

Gossip girl meets Hollywood in this new series by That Boy author, Jillian Dodd.
Keatyn has everything she ever dreamed of. Her life is following the script she wrote for the perfect high school experience. She’s popular, goes to the best parties, dates the hottest guy, and sits at the most coveted lunch table.

She’s just not sure she wants it anymore.

Because really, things aren’t all that perfect. Her best friend is threatening to tell everyone her perfect relationship is a scam. Her perfect boyfriend gets drunk at every party they go to. It’s exhausting always trying to look and act perfect. And deep down, she isn’t sure if she has any true friends.

To add to the drama, her movie star mom’s long-time fan has turned stalker. An older man is flirting with her and telling her they should make a movie together. And she’s crushing on an adorable surfer. Dating a guy like him would mean committing social suicide.

So she writes a new script. One where all the pieces of her life will come together in perfect harmony. But little does she know, there’s someone who will do anything to make sure that doesn’t happen

Hey everyone, Ren here! My hubby decided to hijack my Kindle for the day and read Stalk Me by Jillian Dodd. I think the only reason he chose it is because he saw the hot chick on the cover and assumed it was one of my erotica novels LOL (It has been confirmed....he did hahaha.) I explained to him my love of YA and how the stories are just better. I think I made him a believer :-) I'm a huge Jillian Dodd fan and I'm kinda mad that he read it before me. Here is his review.

Source: Reviewer purchase

I really enjoyed reading this book, it took me right back to high school. I could see all of the things Jillian depicts in her book happening just the way that she describes them; house parties, distinction between social classes, and one girl torn between two very different places.

On one side, Keatyn is one of the popular girls at school, picking up after her drunk boyfriend Sander all the time. On the other hand, she's also Brooklyn's little surfer girl. Brooklyn doesn't go to school, and spends his days smoking weed and surfing. Keatyn's mother is a famous actress, and is left notes by a stalker who claims to have always loved her. She's used to it, but then he goes too far...

The book spans a decent time period, and there's alot of ground to cover, and I don't want to give out many details. Loads of high school drama and unfortunately not enough Cush.  Brandon Cushman, or Cush, throws the wildest parties, always has a fine girl on his arm, but never gets tied down.  I despise Brooklyn's character and almost love to hate him, but that's just me personally.  RiAnne kinda reminds me of Lacey Chabert from Mean Girls, only more of a follower and definitely not willing to cross Vanessa.  Vanessa is a whole different beast in herself, and her character makes me cringe every time I see her name.  It's Keatyn, though, that the story revolves around, and throughout the book she really goes through a lot of changes, from being little miss popularity to not caring what anyone thinks.  She also becomes quite the little lipslut towards the end of the book, but I guess there's a reason for it. I'd love to read the next book in the series, "Kiss Me."

My Review

I usually like to write a little spoiler free synopsis of the book with my review. I find it a little difficult because the blurb pretty much says it all without giving away too much of the story. I admire Maggie in this book. She's kinda spunky and mature. She's been living with her father since her mother walked out on them. Maggie meets Caleb on her way to meet her friend Kyle. I love this whole scene and everything afterwards!! I find that a lot of the YA books I read have too many similarities. That was not the case with this book. This was unlike any story that I have ever read. I love paranormal and Shelly delivered a story that kept my interest from the very first page. It has sweet moments that make me so jealous that Caleb is a fictional character. I found myself drooling several times while reading :-P There's also a little bit of action. I won't go into details on that, but yeah, it does not disappoint. I can't say enough great things about this series. I recommend it to everyone. This was my very first Kindle book and I am so thankful that Amazon recommended it to me. I'm a huge Shelly Crane fan!! Shelly's books introduced me to the world of Indie books and I am eternally grateful!

I had to share this pic from Shelly's website because it is my perfect Caleb!!

I also highly recommend the Collide series by Shelly Crane. The 4th and final book in the installment, Revolution,  just came out this month. This is bittersweet for me. There's just something about this series that I love and I am very sad to see it end. Oh I remember, that something is Cain <3 I think I'm in love!! I will definitely be in need of a box of tissues for this one.

One choice can transform you--or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves--and herself--while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable--and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so.

My Review

First off, I absolutely loved Divergent, book 1 of the series. It was different from other dystopian novels but yet still keeping in the same genre. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and the struggles a teen must go through to live in their society. Insurgent begins where Divergent left off. Tris, Tobias (Four), Caleb(Tris's brother), Marcus and Peter are on the run from the Erudite. They arrive in Amity hoping for some help and a place to hideout for awhile. Their stay is cut short and they must leave Amity for fear of being caught or possibly taken down. One thing during this book that bothered me was the constant bickering between Tobias and Tris. They where constantly at odds with one another and at times it became unbearable. Overall I enjoyed the book. There were parts that confused me or I felt could have been better planned out, but I do believe this book is worth reading. The ending was very interesting and did leave you wanting more. If the ending of this book is any indication of book three, I am very excited.
