Review: Sovereign Hope by Frankie Rose

Young Adult Paranormal Romance

The Hope Series #1

Everyone has a soul.

Some are just worth more than others.

Farley Hope was seventeen when her mother disappeared. In the last six months not much has changed, except that her eighteenth birthday came and went and still no sign of Moira. Her life is just as complicated as it always was: since her father died in a car crash before she was even born, she’s officially parentless, and to top it all off she’s still suffering from the hallucinations. Mind-splitting, vivid hallucinations- the kind prone to induce night terrors and leave you whimpering under your covers like a baby.

The last thing on her mind is boys. Farley is on break from St. Judes’ when she meets Daniel. It’s not some casual run in at a party, or even a blind date with friends, though. Daniel is the guy stalking her in his 1970′s Dodge Charger; the guy standing at her window in the LA lunch hour traffic, determined on dragging her out of her truck.

The moment Farley lays eyes on Daniel, everything changes. However, regrettably for Farley, her life isn’t set to change for the better. She is drawn into a world that will shake apart everything she thought she ever knew. There are truths out there that she must learn: who her father really was, and what it means to have his blood flowing through her veins; that a person’s soul is their only real currency, and there are people who would do anything to take hers; that loving someone can hurt so much more than hating them; but, most importantly, when your future is predestined, there is little you can do to change it.

Farley Hope is prophesied.

Her coming has been awaited for hundreds of years.

She is destined to end the tyranny of the Soul Reavers.

My Review
Farley lived with her mother for 17 years before she disappeared. The police have been unable to give her any leads on the disappearance of her mother. Living alone at 18 is scary enough, but add in the hallucinations that Farley gets. Her doctor diagnosed her with migraines including halos. One day, Farley believes she is being followed. Turns out, there are people that want her dead. She meets Daniel, who tries to convince her that her life is in danger and she needs to leave with him to be safe. Farley soon finds out that her life is not what she thought it was. She is the daughter of an Immortal Reaver who steals peoples souls. Farley is destined to destroy the Reavers, but there are other problems on the rise.

My thoughts...

This book was a fantastic twist on immortals. I loved that the book started off with some action, it really gives you a preview of the juicy goodness that is to come. There were so many curve balls thrown in there that I did not expect. The tension between Farley and Daniel was palpable, to say the least. I would find myself getting impatient waiting for the two of them to get together. I wish there was a bit more romance, but the amount that was there was yummy!! There was a perfect balance of action and storyline. I am definitely looking forward to the rest of the series and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good paranormal read.

My Review

While browsing through my local book store, I came across the first book in this series, Switched. I was taken aback by the beautiful colors of the cover. I read the back and thought to myself "this sounds like a great book," so I gave it a try. I was automatically hooked. The Trylle Trilogy is a great series. This final novel in the series, Ascend, was honestly one of my favorite. Wendy finally came into her own skin, realizing she must be queen and knowing her responsibilities to the thrown and her people. Tove realizes he can no longer live a life that's a lie. War rages on between the Trylle and the Vittra and only Wendy has enough power to stop it. The love triangle between Wendy, Loki and Finn finally comes to an end. Wendy follows her heart and makes her final decision to whom she wants to be with. In the end the book carries a short story about what happens afterwards, which was really fitting. I really enjoyed this series. Amanda Hocking made a world that most people would love to live in. If you are not familiar with this series, you must check it out! I'm glad I did.

Trailer Debut: Khemnet by David Mayer

I am so stoked to debut the trailer for Khemnet by David Mayer!! I am completely in love with this series and cannot wait till 2013 for the next book.  I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Dave about the first two books. You can view that interview HERE.

My review for Reswyt can be found HERE and for Nekhet HERE

Young Adult Fantasy

Deamline Book 1
Blurb: Sabine Jahn has more than an average teen's share of problems. She’s been forced to leave behind everything she knew growing up in Oregon to start high school as a transfer student in California. She’s lost her father to an automobile accident, and her grandfather, preeminent Egyptologist Daniel Jahn, has mysteriously disappeared. She hasn’t slept in months, and no one can tell her why. And now, as she sits in detention for dozing off in class again, she finds herself drifting from her Cameron High detention hall to a vast, eerie forest where immense astral wolves roam past her. Sabine has discovered a way to enter a realm where dreaming minds appear nightly as noble hawks, fierce wolves, and stalwart bears. She learns that the wild, beautiful world she has found is slowly becoming corrupted by the acts of a dead mind trapped within it. Now, the fate of that realm – and our own world – rests in the hands of Sabine, a long-dead French soldier, an Egyptian god, and a mysterious, profoundly gifted boy trapped between worlds.

          Dreamline Book 2

Blurb: In Nekhet, the sequel to the critically-acclaimed Reswyt, Sabine Jahn’s finally asleep – and finding that things in the dreaming realm have changed for the worse. The war has settled into an uneasy stalemate, with the Jager now in a defensive posture behind the great chasm created by Brummbar to protect them from the Queen’s armies. Dylan, now among the horses, finds their mysterious leader steadfastly unwilling to enter into the conflict on either side – and without their aid, the Jager are unable to break out from their positions.

Suspecting that the Queen’s Artifex is designing even more destructive weapons for the Queen’s army, Dylan encourages Sabine to remove him from the Queen's employ by any means necessary. But while Sabine, Josh, and Dylan join forces to awaken the Queen’s Artifex, Sabine is unaware that one of the Queen’s agents is hunting her here on Earth – setting up a breathtaking race against time that will keep readers turning pages to the very end.

Interview & Kindle Giveaway with David Mayer, author of Reswyt and Nekhet

I had the pleasure of interviewing my favorite author, David Mayer, today! I have been reviewing on the blog for almost three months and Dave was my very first review request. I absolutely fell in love with the first book and couldn't wait to finish the second. It's hard for me to put in words how amazing and refreshing this series is.  We have an awesome giveaway following the interview for you all today, thanks to the awesomeness that is Dave Mayer!

Dreamline Series by David Mayer

Blurb for Reswyt: In this spellbinding new paranormal fantasy novel, Sabine Jahn has more than an average teen's share of problems.

Ren: How did you come up with the names Reswyt and Nekhet for the titles?

Dave: Reswyt’s an actual Egyptian word. Well, kind of. rswt is; the Egyptians didn’t write down their vowels. So it might be raswat, or riswet, or any number of variants. I liked the look of reswyt, so that’s what I ran with. For the second book, the theme centered around Sabine strengthening herself – ridding herself of the Queen’s presence, letting go of her father, taking charge of Brummbar’s forces. So I went in search of a good Egyptian word to cover that conceptual ground, and nekhet jumped right out at me. As for why Khemnet is named khemnet…you’ll have to wait.

Ren: How did you come up with the concept for Reswyt?

Dave: It came from two distinct sources: insomnia, and a YA-inquisitive daughter. After our twins were born, it completely blew apart my sleep schedule, obviously, and it took a long, long time to get back on it, and at that point, I found I’d developed this odd new quirk of waking up around 3AM every night.  So I started doing a ton of research into sleep disorders, and their effects on people, and it just so happened that one night, I learned this odd bit of trivia as I read -  that, during REM sleep, the human body’s muscles are essentially paralyzed, with the exception of the basics – breathing and such. And, serendipitously enough, when you’re sleep-deprived, your brain starts coming up with all sorts of offbeat comments during your usual internal monologue; so at some point I wondered why this was the case, that REM locked up your muscular system, and a little voice said, “because your mind can only control one set of muscles at a time, and it’s off somewhere controlling another set.” And that was the genesis of the basic idea.

But it began as a very different book, with Sabine as an adult police detective in Vancouver, and it wasn’t going anywhere; I’d done two or three test-writes and it fizzled every way I was trying it. And one night, I’m reading on the couch, and my daughter comes up to me with her Kindle – she was very into beginning to explore YA at the time - and says, “I don’t see myself in any of these books. Are there any YA books with a gifted girl protagonist?” Right there, I had the main character, and it all just flowed from there.

Ren: It's funny that you mention insomnia. When I started reading Reswyt, I developed a case of mild insomnia. Coincidence, maybe? LOL

How much research did you do for Reswyt and Nekhet?

Dave: A great deal, and I hope it shows in the work. Good research makes a book sparkle, I think; some of my favorite books really benefit from the effort that goes into research. It’s the muscle beneath the skin, so to speak. It’s particularly important in a series like this one, where you have what is essentially a magical realm that’s become sullied by organization and technology. Neither was ever supposed to exist in Reswyt, and both are slowly bringing about its ruination. So adding in that element of realism in what’s happening there makes the story more believable, I hope. And, as a sidebar, it’s really fun.

Ren: It definitely shows! I was amazed at the amount of facts that went into the book. To say I was intrigued is an understatement.

What kind of music is on your writing playlist?

Dave: You’re actually the first person to ask me that, and it’s a really good question; music is a really vital component of getting into a particular headspace and a particular character. I write a lot of Sabine’s dialogue to Bon Iver and Radiohead and The Smiths. Many of the Reswyt scenes get written to Dead Can Dance and Vangelis and Ulrich Schnauss. Curve and Junius and Bullet For My Valentine are great for action scenes. But if I had to pick one album to write to, it would be Enjoy the Parade by Choke the Word. They’re an amazing Denver band that just drops me right into the space I need to get into to write. Check them out on Spotify. I even stuck them into Nekhet; there’s an anagram of Choke the Word in the book someplace. See if you can find it.

Ren: Score for me!! I don't listen to music while I read. When I hear some songs, they may remind me of books that I have read. Sometimes it's the tune and other times it's the lyrics.

Which character did you enjoy writing the most?

Dave: I probably have two different answers to that. The character I love most is Sabine; she gets special handling, and not just because she’s the protagonist, but because it’s important that she reads as a real person, with flaws and hopes and dreams and failings. The character I’m most intrigued by is probably the Queen, just because she’s such a unique entity. It was important to me, with the character of the Queen, that there be back story and substance to her. I didn’t want to check a cackling villain out of Central Casting – I wanted there to be more than that.

Ren: I love Sabine as well, though I would have to say Josh is my favorite. I'm definitely rooting for him! He also makes origami, so I may be a little biased.

Which scene from Nekhet was your favorite to write?

Dave: I’ve got a bunch, and I’ll try not to spoiler any of them, but I’ll just run through a few of my favorites. The scene in which Sabine encounters the Steersman was a great pleasure to write. There are some Moravin/Matthew scenes that were very enjoyable. The first encounter between Sabine and Brianna; Taryn’s escape from the house. The overall thread that has Sabine letting go of her father was more cathartic than fun, but felt good. And then there were some scenes that were just plain fun – for instance, the fact that Sabine keeps getting the same physician’s assistant in Boulder Community Hospital.

Ren: I wont go into the details, but my favorite scene is the one when Sabine finds out who Brummbar is :-) :::insert my Cheshire Cat grin:::

Everyone views characters differently. Who would you says resembles your human characters the most?

Dave: I didn’t start off doing this, but it became important as I went along to ‘cast the movie.’ I think most authors do that, if only for fun; who plays who in the film? Sabine’s got a very Danielle Panabaker feel to her. I’ll put Sam Claflin in as Josh and Aaron Johnson as Dylan. Guillaume, prior to his death: Cillian Murphy; post, Sophie Marceau. Brianna, Ellen Page. Taryn, Abigail Breslin. Am I missing anyone?

Ren: I don’t usually like spoilers, but I have to know....do we get to see more of the Queens past in the next book?

Dave: You do. The opening of the third book, in fact, touches on what happened to Guillaume just after his death – and then there’s another scene, almost wistful, that’s in progress right now. And I’m not going to spoiler anything, but I will tell you that the Queen spends a good portion of the third book running for her life. And not just from Sabine.

Ren: Thank you so very much for joining us for this interview! It has truly been a pleasure to have read your books. I look forward to the next book! You have made a stalker out of me :-)

Dave: Thanks for inviting me to take part – love your blog and can’t wait to come back and talk about the third book, Khemnet, in 2013.

 My Review

This review may contain spoilers for the first book. Please do not read any further if you have not read Reswyt. You can find me review of Reswyt HERE

The war in Reswyt rages on in the second installment of the Dreamline series. At the end of the first book, Sabine found the lead box that was meant to house the pendant that allows her to travel to Reswyt. When the pendant is not left in the box, it inhibits sleep. Sabine is finally able to sleep and dream. I don't want to give too much away about her new role in Reswyt, but she manifests as an animal. Dylan also returns to Reswyt as a horse and tries to rally the other horses to fight with the Jager. Sabine has been teaching Josh to use her pendant and how to do magic in Reswyt. There are several new characters in Nekhet and each one plays an important role in the story.

After a tragic death in the Jager camp, they formulate a plan to capture the Queen's Artifex, Moravin. Moravin has been building weapons and guns for the queen. They fear that he is searching for materials to make a larger, more threatening weapon that will destroy the Balance of Reswyt. The plan is to "awaken" him, but his situation on earth has complicated things.

My thoughts....

Once again, I am left feeling like a bumbling idiot! I'm still amazed that a book can leave me speechless. I mean seriously, I can't even form a coherent sentence right now. Dave has produced another STUNNING work of art. The characters are extremely well written and you get to see them grow in this book. I wasn't used to Dave's writing style when I read Reswyt, but now I see the beauty in it. It was much easier now that I knew what kind of flow to expect. The story is told from several of the characters vantage points. I think that was what confused me while reading Reswyt, but now I have come to appreciate it. I didn't think that there was any way to top Reswyt, boy was I dead wrong!! Nekhet is an exhilarating roller coaster of action and adventure that has left me wanting! I'm sharing a comment from Facebook with you because it is exactly how I feel. "I envy anyone's ability to read this book for the first time. It is so moving, and so beautiful and so...GOOD." -Erin. It's safe to say that I have found my new favorite author.

Excerpt~Review~Giveaway: Flutter of Luv by LM Preston

Young Adult Romance ~ Short Story

Dawn, the neighborhood tomboy, is happy to be her best friend’s shadow. Acceptance comes from playing football after school with the guys on the block while hiding safely behind her glasses, braces, and boyish ways. But Tony moves in, becomes the star Running Back on her school’s football team, and changes her world and her view of herself forever.

Excerpt

Every girl has a little ‘stalker’ in her. I know it. Poochie stalked Scotty, her secret long-time crush, and Sharon stalked Kevin. But now, I stalked Tony. Most times he didn’t see me. I’ve been really careful this summer to give him lots of space. When he played football with the neighborhood guys, I stayed out of the game. It was kinda humiliating to admit that I still watched all the games he played with the other boys from my comfy spot in the dirt under the bleachers.

My Review

Since this was a short story, I'm going to keep my description a bit shorter to avoid spoilers.

Dawn has always been a tomboy. She wears big, ugly glasses, has braces, and always wears her hair in a ponytail. She plays football with all of the neighborhood boys until Tony shows up. Dawn has never felt so flustered over a boy before Tony. As time goes on, she becomes closer to Tony, but never in a romantic way. She longs for him but believes she will always be his tomboy friend.

I'm going to leave it just like that, short and sweet.

I really enjoyed this short story. I feel that LM created a story that most teens can relate to. I felt Dawn's emotions throughout the story and that is important to me as a reader. I think it's safe to say that you could tell what that story was leading up to, but reading what did transpire made my grin like a 3 year old on Christmas day. My cheeks still hurt from smiling so darn much. I wasn't expecting the last few scenes and I was sad because I thought things were through for Dawn and Tony. I will admit that the last scene made me cry. It was an "I'm so happy, I want to hug LM" cry LOL. I would highly recommend this short story to anyone, teenager and adult. Let me just further add that Poochie, is a meanie head!! That is all... :-)

My Review

First off, the cover is beautiful. I love the way Luce looks so desperate to find whatever or whomever  she's searching  for. I was so excited to get my hands on this book. After  reading Torment, the previous novel, I was dying to find out what happens to Luce, Daniel, and their other angel and demon friends. From the very start, Lauren Kate sucked me back into her world like I had never left. I really enjoyed how Luce and Daniel could finally be together like a couple. Throughout the series, it seemed they never got enough time together. In Rapture, they finally got the time they needed. I loved that there were more scenes involving Cam, I really missed him. I know a lot of fans would love to see Luce and Cam together in the end. Although, I cant say who Luce winds up with. I can tell you it's a very touching ending, a real tear jerker. In this final book, Luce finally realizes who she really is and how and when she and Daniel first met. A secret thats been bothering her from the moment they met. I was very shocked to tell you the truth to find out Luce's true identity, but I will say no more. I dont want to spoil it for anyone. Im hoping for a spin off. I'd love to hear more about the other angels and demons' lives before and after this tiring journey they just went through.  I must say though, if you are a fan of the Fallen series, you must check out Rapture. It truly was a fitting ending to this series.
