Now six years have passed, and she has run into him once more at the local fairgrounds in Las Vegas. He desperately wants another chance, and he’s willing to do anything to get her back. She’s not willing to give him anything but a taste of his own medicine, and this may be her chance for payback. But is she only getting in way over her head?

This book was the second New Adult genre book I have ever read. Saying that, I’m addicted if they are all as good as this book. I love Alexia Purdy’s dystopian and fantasy novels. This is a completely different genre, but just as scrumptious and readable as all her other novels I’ve had the pleasure to read so far.

Piper and Sasha have enough baggage to fill their own train car. Unrequited love, an immature decision, and being young tear them apart at the peak of their relationship. Years later, Piper is an adult with a good job, good apartment, and seemingly good life… but lonely and still hurt from Sasha’s rash decision in the past. To prevent a spoiler, Sasha has even more on his plate and conspires within elements of Piper’s life to try and wheedle in a second chance.

What follows is a sweet romance with bittersweet turmoil throws in for good measure. Mature content fit with the story and was not overdone like in some novels. Totally adored the happy ending that was neither sappy nor unbelievable. It’s a beautiful ending for two damaged people that heal each other, and are able to breathe in life again.

Prologue

STANDING ON THE slick, damp rocks smoothed over by centuries of wind tossed waves, my heart stopped. Piper wore nothing but her swimsuit and the temperature was cool enough to make our noses blush pink. Hunger lingered in her eyes, making my own desire burn through me, the frigid air forgotten in the heat of a deep ache and longing pummeling me unexpectedly. I ran to her, embracing her thin frame and attempted to stifle the goose bumps flaring across her skin. We were on vacation on one of my favorite beaches of the Oregon coast. A place to forget the insanity of college life.

The alcove was a small private beach, free from any barrage of tourists. Leading her over the mess of rocks and sand to the blanket I had set out for our picnic, I carefully cradled her body as we slipped down onto it, our lips devouring each other’s until they felt downright bruised. Hers were bright pink, full and swollen from my assault as I explored them. Our skins had turned from frozen to searing, the wind all but forgotten except for toying with the ends of her long brown hair with unseen fingertips. It lay fanned out underneath us, a warm pillow for her head.

I’d never met anyone like Piper. She was the vision of my dream woman, the one I never knew I had wanted; always spontaneous and filled with a vibrant life force so few possess. I reached over and undid the ties to her bikini, raking my fingers down her sides, desperate to devour ever

y last bit. She was soft and her curves supple against the hard rocks pressing on us. We didn’t care, we were lost to the world. We could’ve jumped up and rushed into the aged beach house a few yards away, where the fire burned warm and the bed creaky but comfy, yet even that was not a concern. All that mattered was kissing her, everywhere, everyplace in every way to make sure some sort of fiery warmth caressed the cold away and our wanting satisfied.

Shivering from my touch, she opened her hooded eyes, glazed with lust and most definitely matching my own. Her fingers curled around my blonde hair, as she whispered my name “Sasha…” before her voice ebbed away and my lips found hers once more. It was there that I gave away my heart, before all the wrong snaked into our lives back home. Before all the flighty decisions and selfishness had sent us spiraling into oblivion, leaving us broken. I wanted it back, all the ‘before’ and ‘once upon a time’s’. I still did, now more than ever before. Salvaging our hearts made me determined, it was the only way either of us could really live again.

Review: Selling Scarlett by Ella James

Elizabeth DeVille doesn't belong at a party like this—one where the gowns cost more than her Camry and cigars run higher than her grad school utility bills. Dragged out of seclusion by her best friend Suri, Elizabeth is merely playing dress-up, rubbing elbows with a crowd that banished her troubled family years ago.

Hunter West is tired. Tired of parties, tired of pretending, and tired of trying to right a wrong that haunts him every day. Bourbon heir and professional poker player by day, by night Hunter is gambling with his life in a high-stakes game of crime and blackmail.

When Elizabeth stumbles into Hunter's den of vices, she's a light in the darkness, a flame in the void. And, just like everything he touches, Hunter mars her in a record time. To rectify the damage done, Elizabeth needs money she doesn't have, and she's come up with a foolproof way to get it.

Follow Elizabeth—code-named Scarlett—to the lush Nevada brothel where she'll auction her virginity and risk the only thing that's not for sale: her heart. The highest bidder is a familiar face, with wicked hands and the devil's mouth. And a secret so dark that it could cost her life.

***RECOMMENDED FOR READERS 17+ DUE TO SEXUALITY AND MATURE LANGUAGE.***

Glad this was the First New Adult genre book I decided to purchase and read. I loved Ms. James’s writing style and easy to follow plotline. The book has romance, major sexy-time themes, mystery, and tons of humor. I adored Elizabeth from the beginning and welcomed a different style of lead female that isn’t perfectly sculpted and whiney. She bucks up and takes on life’s crap with style. Her family is pretty messed up, but not as bad as Hunter’s. Hunter has mommy issues like wow and is taken advantage of by the awful witch Priscilla. I wanted to smack her out of the book she was so evil. I loved the romance between Elizabeth and Hunter and how their relationship evolved. Toward the end, I was wondering when they were finally going to get it on! Sheesh, talk about holding out for too long.. Especially on Hunter’s end!

Her best male friend, Cross, is all kinds of physically, mentally, and emotionally vulnerable and a possible match for perky Suri. Elizabeth’s love for her friends turned family is heartwarming, and her willing sacrifices make for a unique plotline. I can’t wait for Love Inc. #2!

Warning for squeamish readers who don’t like fairly graphic mature content.

Review: Family Magic by Patti Larsen

Sixteen-year-old Sydlynn Hayle is the daughter of a powerful witch and a demon lord of the seventh plane. The trouble is, she just wants to be ordinary. Syd struggles to survive the minefield of her new high school while being torn between her attraction to football hero Brad Peters and the darkly mysterious Quaid Moromond. When her coven comes under attack, Syd is forced to face the fact only her power can save her family's magic.

Source: PDF provided by I.O.U. Book Tours in exchange for review (this in no way affected my honest opinion)

Sydlynn (Syd) Hayle has to deal with being a teenager and a weird existence in school and at home. Since I am way past my teenage years, Syd’s bipolar relationship with her mother drove me batty. They like each other and have an amazing understanding, and the next page they are about to tear each other’s hair out. The first half of the book introduces the reader to Syd’s supernatural world, family relationships, and craptastic school life. Two possible love interests appear, total polar opposites of each other. One is the all American football popular dude and the handsome, broody, emo guy with secrets.

Story picks up as a mysterious evil force causes havoc in the witches’ lives, even messing with Syd’s memory. As she grows into her own personal power and teenage angst, people start turning against her. The action really flew toward the end and I appreciated sequence of events that lead to the ending.

Her grandmother and little sister are sweet and hilarious and help to balance out Syd’s sometimes selfish and whiney teen ways.

About me, huh? Well, my official bio reads like this: Patti Larsen is an award-winning middle grade and young adult author with a passion for the paranormal. But that sounds so freaking formal, doesn’t it? I’m a storyteller who hears teenager’s voices so loud I have to write them down. I love sports, even though they don’t love me. I’ve dabbled in everything from improv theater to film making and writing TV shows, singing in an all girl band to running my own hair salon.
But always, always, writing books calls me home.
I’ve had my sights set on world literary domination for a while now. Which means getting my books out there, to you, my darling readers. It’s the coolest thing ever, this job of mine, being able to tell stories I love, only to see them all shiny and happy in your hands… thank you for reading.
As for the rest of it, I’m short (permanent), slightly round (changeable) and blonde (for ever and ever). I love to talk one on one about the deepest topics and can’t seem to stop seeing the big picture. I happily live on Prince Edward Island, Canada, home to Anne of Green Gables and the most beautiful red beaches in the world, with my very patient husband and five massive cats.

Review: Damaged by H.M. Ward

Life sucks. And, as soon as Sidney picks up the pieces something always knocks her back onto her butt. It's never pretty, but this time is different. This time pretty isn't even the right word.

Peter is the personification of perfection. It's like he fell off his angel perch in purgatory, because let's face it--any guy that hot has got to be naughty. He was probably sent here to ruin her life.

Peter is beyond beautiful with his sexy blue eyes, dark hair, and toned body. Add in his charming wit and Peter is everything Sidney ever wanted in a man, but when things get hot and heavy Peter shows her the door. Sidney takes the walk of shame and leaves. It's the end of the worst blind date ever. Her life couldn't possibly reach higher levels of suckage, but it does.

The next morning everything comes crashing down. The insanely hot guy from last night, the one that saw her half naked, is teaching at the front of the class room.

 Source: Ebook borrowed via booklending.com.

Sidney has been used, abused, and spit out without any support from those close to here. She picks up her life and deposits it in a small Texas town to attend college on scholarship. Sidney’s trying to break out of her fears and attends blind dates with a close friend, and ends up with one loser after another. The hilarious beginning between her and Peter just rocked my socks off.

When it’s discovered by them both they are boss and employee, crap hits the fan. I didn’t feel like this was a teacher/student forbidden love. I think it was more of a universal “dang, that sucks” situation. Their steamy attraction to each other and cutting banter continued to rock my already off socks. Adding in their love/experience with swing dancing adds a very fun and teasing element to their relationship.

Much later in the book, Peter spins his own really sad tale to explain his baggage. I appreciate Peter’s sacrifice and wanted to wack Sidney upside the head at her first reaction. Woman, seriously?!

When Sidney’s past shows up, the result is disheartening, but positive. I am in knots wondering how they will work out their lovely mess. I’m very drooling to reach book #2.

Review: Branded by Abi Ketner and Missy Kalicicki

Fifty years ago the Commander came into power and murdered all who opposed him. In his warped mind, the seven deadly sins were the downfall of society. He created the Hole where sinners are branded according to their sins and might survive a few years. At best.
Now LUST wraps around my neck like blue fingers strangling me. I’ve been accused of a crime I didn’t commit and now the Hole is my new home.

Darkness. Death. Violence. Pain.

Now every day is a fight for survival. But I won’t die. I won’t let them win.

The Hole can’t keep me. The Hole can’t break me.
I am more than my brand. I’m a fighter.
My name is Lexi Hamilton, and this is my story.

Source: .Mobi provided by Netgalley & publisher in return for an honest review (this in no way affected my honest review)

Review: A society torn apart from war tries to rebuild itself into a utopia without any of the 7 deadly sins tainting its citizens. Imagine living in a gilded cage of wealth and comfort, but one accusation of any of the deadly sins will send you to The Hole. The Hole is where all those physically branded by their sin live, die, and try to survive against all odds.

Lexi is accused falsely of lust, is branded, and thrown into The Hole. Her branded sin causes even more hardships and death for those that bear it. For reasons that aren’t revealed until the end of the book, Lexi is given a fairly bearable job at The Hole’s only hospital under the guidance of a kindly doctor. She has an assigned proctor, Cole, which is unusual for anyone in the Hole. They grow into a relationship fraught with sadness, hopefulness, and turmoil. As the story progresses, both of their secrets are revealed while the world around them literally goes to hell.

Between the fight for their freedom and bringing down the Commander, the twists and turns in their dystopian novel will keep the reader engaged until the very end. I was left flipping the last page of my Kindle, hoping there was something to keep me going until the next novel.

My trip to UtopYA Con 2013!

Wow! What can I say about UtopYA to make everyone understand the pure awesomeness that it is?? It was truly an experience that every indie book lover should have in their life. This community is so amazing and I met so many wonderful authors, bloggers and readers that I now call friends.

I finally got to meet Team Zombie Slut in person! In case you don't know who they are, it's a small group of us that love all things zombie. Lori Parker from Contagious Reads has been dubbed The Zombie Slut and we are her evil minions LOL. Author's Annie Walls and Alexia Purdy are also part of the team. There are a few others that we're unable to make it but we love them anyway :-).

I will be here all day if I sit here and name everyone that I met but I'd like to name a few that were particularly awesome to me.
Lori and I at the Awards
