*** 3.5 Stars ***

Mikah and Vivienne have successfully moved into the realm of blissful, sappy, love-dovey land. After all they have faced together; they now come together with trust and adoration as they face their mutual enemies. Both have learned their heritage and come face to face with their true destinies. Mikah and Vivienne train with their guardian to face off on Riley and the bad dude himself to restore balance to good and evil. First love, then butt kicking, a baby… then marriage, maybe?

This wrapped up the end of the series and had lots of explanations of Mikah and Vivienne’s lineage, the angelic world they are part of as well as Earth, and reasons behind Vivienne’s horrific childhood. The book is a bit lacking in easy flow like the first three, but filled in a lot of background that lacked in the first three. I really enjoyed this series and it was nice to have a happy ending. The book felt a little rushed and there was A LOT of sex scenes that were not present in the past books. Still, it was a good feeling ending the series on a happy ending and no cliffhanger.

“Give Me Reason is a story full of heart, pain, doubt and learning to trust again. This story is about a woman who doesn't immediately run off with the man who offers her the world. She has seen the ugly in the world and trusting someone again isn't a price she is willing to pay."

“Vivienne and Mikah's story is intense, captivating and unforgettable. Their story is honest and gritty.”

“Zoey Derrick had me within the first two pages. Her characters are alive and completely relateable, likeable and down-right loveable. I empathize, I cheer, I fear, I love with them. It takes a good solid book with a solid story and direction to get a hold of me, not that it matters, so to me for this book to grab right out the gate like this, AMAZING!”

Blogging: One Size Does Not Fit All

ren

Hello everyone! I wanted to briefly talk about blogging in general and my experiences. I've had the pleasure of working with several new bloggers the past few months and the most common question/statement I get is "how do I become a better blogger." My response "How the hell should I know." I've been blogging for 2 years this April and I still don't have it figured out. I'd like to offer all of my golden wisdom but let's face it, some things don't work for everyone. I will say this... There is NO WRONG WAY to be a blogger. Do you and be happy.

Why I started my blog...

Believe it or not, I didn't even know book blogs existed until 3 years ago...yes, that's sad, but I live in a bubble (don't judge me) I couldn't believe the world I was introduced to. INDIE BOOKS! After some time following some blogs, I felt like I needed to share the wealth with the rest of the world. I didn't care if people didn't read my blog...my reviews were out there for everyone to see.

When I first started, I had NO CLUE how to even make my blog look nice. I wish I had a picture to show you just how hit it looked. It's so embarrassing. My graphic designer brother even laughed at me. I didn't even know what the hell and HTML gadget was or how to use it ::insert crash course on basic HTML here:: It took me MONTHS to figure it all out. It's not so easy when there's no one to tell you how to do it correctly. I'd ask other bloggers and I usually got snubbed(yeah...that happened) I think I've come a long way since then lol.

There is no wrong way to write a review (just don't be a nasty troll)

I've seen just about every kind of review. I tell readers this all the time. There is no wrong or right when reviewing. It's all about your perspective and YOUR reading experience. Did you like the book? Did you luuuuuuurveeee the book? Did you loathe it? TELL US! All it takes is a few sentences. I've seen reviews a mile long! More power to them but I've never had a way with words. I like to keep it short, sweet and simple. Then there is a difference between constructive criticism and downright trashing. DON'T BE THAT GUY. I tell me son that all the time and he laughs at me. All joking aside, no one likes a prick. I've seen some really nasty ish and I don't entertain it. I won't read it.

It's okay to not finish a book

This is still a big issue for me. I guess you can say I like to commit to something when I start it. It's almost like when I watch a movie...if I make it to the 30 minute mark, I feel obligated to finish it even if it's shyte. The same applies to books. If I make it to the 50% mark and it's starting to slow down, I push myself to finish. My co-blogger Heather and I were just talking about this today. She says "Let it die, lady." Yes, this gave me quite a chuckle. She goes on to say "Then you're taking away more time that you don't even have for a book you don't even like? It's like walking into the wall to see if it happens again." LOL well now that you put it that way hahahaha. All I'm saying is that it's okay to do it. Don't beat yourself up over it.

It's okay to say no...

I'm convinced that I have a TBR list that will never be finished...like EVER. I love books, I love my blog, I love authors, I love readers and I love bloggers....but guess what, I do have a life. I would love to do everything in my power to introduce readers to new books. But there comes a time when you just have to say no. I hate refusing reviews but it happens, and with me it's more often than not. We all have responsibilities. I work 5 jobs and I'm a mom. What's sleep? LOL Don't feel bad!

Don't be a snob

I hate to be the one to say it, but we don't all get along. Yes we all have a common hobby, books and blogs, but sometimes that's where it ends. Forming relationships with other bloggers is essential. It's a "you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours" scenario. Being civil and kind to one another is key. I've seen so much blogger vs. blogger bashing and it sucks! There's even blogger/author bashing. When will it ever end? I know it's not all sunshine and rainbows but damn. Just don't be nasty.

Don't be afraid to ask for advice

I'm talking to you, Nancy! LOL A few months ago I kinda took Nancy under my wing. She had a basic blog and had so many questions but didn't feel comfortable asking. I kinda forced some knowledge on her lol. I wish I had someone like me when I first started. Would have saved me a lot of headaches. I would hope that you would find some bloggers that can help you achieve your goals. P.S. we have a little "Blogging the Books" group on Facebook. It's like a one stop shop with other bloggers. Feel free to join and ask away :) https://www.facebook.com/groups/770153546333546/

Have fun!

Your blog, your rules. You can run your blog in whatever way makes YOU feel comfortable. Different strokes for different folks. If it's starting to feel like a job then you're doing it wrong. Blogging should be something you escape to, not want to escape from.

Please, don't ever hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. I may be crazy but I like to help in any way I can. Until next time!

4.5 Stars

This is a fantastic debut novel for Ms. Ibarra. Ryla just turned 18 and will assume the rule of the country her father brought back to survival from the brink of collapse during a war when she turns 25. Her older and sensitive sister, Alanna, has been passed over for the ruling even though she is the eldest. In the strict society their father has built, marriage is arranged by genetics, jobs are given based on results from testing, and the law is followed to the letter or swift consequences are enforced. Alanna, now running a clinic in the middle of the city, is about to marry Owen, who has been her arranged suitor since childhood. The novel goes back and forth between Alanna and Ryla’s perspectives, keeping the book fresh and interesting. While Alanna battles her feelings for Owen and struggles to not be pained by her father’s constant disapproval, Ryla’s eyes are slowly being opened to how the country is truly run.

Meeting and becoming engaged in a secret friendship/relationship with Tyson, her tutor’s son, Ryla is introduced to the underground movement the Polaris group. As she is accepted into their ranks, she learns the horrors of keeping the country running smoothly according to her father’s dictates and views, and causalities keep rising. Ryla is forced to make a choice after two catastrophic losses- save her people or stay with her family?

Super entertaining read that never got dull. The author clearly explains the history and culture of the world Ryla and Alanna live in and has very real characters readers will be attached to.

4.5 Stars

In this third installment of the Reason series, readers following this serial will finally get the swoony, lovely-dovey sparks between Mikah and Vivienne. Now that Vivienne is fully recovered and the baby still living and growing happily in her belly, she realizes she needs help to keep safe. Mikah has the money, means, and security to keep her safe… and the strong instinct to protect her that Vivienne has never experienced from anyone before, including her substance abusing mother. Mikah and Vivienne are both exposed to their new reality- they are supernatural beings that are playing a huge part in the fight for good. Something nasty is lurking in the dark and shows up repeatedly in Vivienne’s dreams. Mikah busies himself wooing Vivienne and protecting her against the dangers of the present to protect their future.
This novel has all the sweet emotion and attraction that has been building in the previous serial books. Mikah has a genuinely golden heart and Vivienne continues to strive as a damaged, vulnerable, and very strong female lead. This series has kept me on the edge of my seat. Between the building romance and danger, and slow leaking of background details, I can’t wait for the next read.

excerpt
He pulls back, clicking off the light, and we proceed further into the apartment. It opens up to the right into the kitchen, which is bigger than my entire apartment. It's been done in beautiful dark countertops and cabinets, not quite black, that make the silver appliances stand out. A breakfast bar that separates the hall from the kitchen has three bar-height chairs whose color matches the cabinets.
He moves on, opening a door directly across from the kitchen. "Here's the second bedroom."
I peek inside: deep blue carpet; a white dresser and some matching bedside tables; light blue walls; and pictures of beaches, beach houses and even one of a pretty lighthouse.
"This room can be used for anything you want. Add a bed...or a crib." I can't begin to imagine what the softness in his voice on the last word means, but it's comforting.
I pull back from the door. "It looks lovely."
He smiles in return and closes the door again. He leads me into the living room and I'm surprised by how comfortable the space looks. There is an oversized L-shaped couch with large pillows and deep seats, the kind you just want to curl up on all day. On the wall in front of the couch is a large TV, probably the largest I've ever seen. Below that is an entertainment center that houses two sleek black boxes that are probably for the cable and maybe a DVD player.
The coffee table between the couch and the TV is made of wood similar to that of the floor, and underneath the table is a pretty, deep purple rug that stands out against the light furniture.
On the other side of the couch, the curtains pulled back, is a large sliding glass door leading out to a patio, and beyond that, a view that has captured my attention. The balcony overlooks the river down below, and I can see a barge making its trek upriver. Even with the trees nearly bare from the cold, the view is still breathtaking.
I sense Mikah's eyes on me, but I don't pay him much attention as I walk around the couch, wanting to have a better look at the view.
The door slides open easily, and a rush of air sweeps into the apartment – not overly powerful, but strong enough to cause my body to shiver. I step out onto the balcony and just stand there, dazed by the beauty below.

After a few moments, I feel my heart skip a beat and the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, then Mikah's hand on the small of my back.
"It's beautiful out here," I say, not wanting to pull my eyes away from the scene to look at him.
"This apartment has the best view. Come, I've got something else to show you."
I scowl at him. My heart pounds in my chest for reasons I don't quite understand, but I let him lead me back inside, his hand still resting on my lower back.
He reaches around and closes the door behind us. "Over here," he says, pointing toward a door on the wall opposite the TV I take a tentative step in that direction, unsure of why I'm hesitant now.
He reaches for the handle and pushes the door open.

This novel starts out with 18 year old Christian about to profess his love to his best friend, 16 year old Iris. The next morning, Christian wakes up to a virus that has invaded the local water supply and created zombies of those who didn’t get the memo. He ends up battling his former dorm mates for his lucky hide. He makes it out into the parking garage, meets a local rock star, and makes his way out of town to rescue the love of his life. He finds her rescued by the local basketball hunk, Mike, and Mike’s little brother who is carrying a deadly secret. They make it out to Christian’s father’s farm; only to have to battle their worst fears- some of the loved ones have turned and are coming for them. Christian may have found and rescued Iris only to lose her in the very end. The book ends with a cliffhanger- a mysterious repeating message on the radio that could save ‘em or kill ‘em.

I am slightly obsessed with zombie/end of the world/dystopian novels, as most people can tell if they read my list of past reviewed books. This book was not a bad addition to the genre, but didn’t offer anything super new or eyebrow- rising to the zombie genre. This was a good young adult version with a bit more goo and gore than most. It was a nice change to have a book given from a male’s perspective and Christian is a genuinely easy character to like.

The Vampire's Food Chain

Add-to-Goodreads-button   Buy-book-from-Amazon-button review This is a bit of different kind of vampire book. You have a vampire named Shawn who has outed the vampire community, works in a call center and ends up with the job of a God. But she never once forgets her friends, they are always there to help her and give her advice.  When starts taking on jobs from the God meetings well that is when she discovers someone close to her wants to kill her but who? She thinks everyone is her friend but are they really? Now I thought the story line of the book was decent, you learn a lot about the value of friendship, good and evil of course. But it just seemed to really fall flat for me. I guess I wanted more within the story. It really wasn't what I was hoping for. Not a lot of action within the story I mean there are like 2 fight scenes. There seemed to be a lot of mentioning of her feeding off of Derek, which was cool but still it was like okay. About towards the ending I was just getting a bit bored I kept losing interest, but I stayed with the book. She did about two jobs within her God state but it wasn't really anything that WOWed me.

My favorite quote: "Vamps don't mate for longer than the length of a penis". Now the ending left me going okay could there be a book two and it helped bump my rating back up to a 4 from a 3. I would like to see what her next job is and if it will be packed with maybe more action for a vampire book.

In the new world order, collagen and Botox are out; becoming a vampire is in. Houses are not only green; they’re empathetic. Yet bad guys and crime still exist, some of it sanctioned by the gods. Vampire Shawn Goodwin has one purpose in life: to be the first of her kind to walk in the light forever. She’s taken the first step in her journey by becoming a 911 emergency operator and counselor on the night shift. She saves lives for a living. In order to throw off the shroud of vampirism, Shawn sees her invitation to become a god as a sign that it’s possible to become a real immortal, not the pale copy that vamps are. (They can be killed, after all.) So she accepts the offer, only to find that someone is trying to stake her before she reaches the immortal state. Which of her so-called friends is really her enemy? Derek, the wizard whose blood feeds her? Jane, his sister, the witch who watches over them? Anthony, the head vampire? His brother Timothy, who resents Anthony’s power? Enrique or Luke, Anthony’s right hand men? Or Tom or Max, who like Anthony, Timothy, and the entourage have suddenly come into her life?

review

Kim is 16 years old and has lived in the shadow of her popular sister, Charley, for the majority of her life. Their parents have split, divorced, and Kim lives with Charley and her bratty little brother with their mother in a new home. One night, after receiving a mysterious text and going home before Kim, Charley is found by Kim with her wrists slashed in an apparent suicide. Kim suddenly finds herself in a nightmare. She can’t remember finding Charley and she keeps seeing a mysterious dark haired guy everywhere that no one else sees- at her sister’s funereal, school, and on the street. Written off as crazy and seeing a shrink to boot, Kim keeps seeking answers to her sister’s death. When another teen dies, Kim starts to grill the mysterious stranger, Matthew, who might not be human. She is suddenly faced with the reality that magic is real in the world and those close to her can’t be trusted. Kim faces her own demise multiple times, saved by Matthew, and her own good luck. She faces off her with her sister’s killer and the human who brought him into our world, hoping for revenge and peace.

This was a well crafted young adult novel. It was extremely hard for me to put down the book and I enjoyed the cut off, quick style of the writing. The author doesn’t skimp on vast descriptions, but gets down to the nitty-gritty point. I look forward to continuing Kim’s story in book #2. The magic and magical entities presented in this book defy the young adult genre filled with way too many vampires.
